The Best Robot Lawn Mowers For Large Gardens Reviews
1. WORX WR153E L1500 Landroid Robotic Mower 1500m²
The WORX WR153E L1500 Landroid Robotic Mower 1500m² is a plug-and-play lawnmower for very large lawns. This means that it comes already programmed and, if the settings suit your schedule, you can use it straight out the box once you’ve set up the boundary wires. If you need to change the programming, you can do so from the screen and keyboard on the top of the mower or from the app you install on your smartphone (Android or iPhone).
The L1500 Landroid Robotic Mower is part of the WORX 20V power tool range. Although this unit comes with a Lithium-ion battery, you can use the fully-charged battery from any other tool in the same range as a backup for when the first battery runs down, giving you non-stop mowing time.
On set-up and when you’ve placed the wire perimeter, this WORX mower figures out the best pattern to mow the lawn. It may look as if it’s just ambling randomly across the grass. But the AIA software figures out the best cutting path without unnecessary reversing and without leaving stripes. The Cut-to-Edge features allow the mower to cut close to the boundary wires. If you place the wires carefully, you won’t need to trim the lawn edges much after mowing.
The cutting width of this WORX mower is a standard (for robotic mowers) 22cm. You have a choice of four cutting heights from 30mm to 60mm, from a fairly close trim to a more laid-back look. Although this mower is advertised as handling a 35% slope with no problem, some other online reviewers we read so say that it struggles with lawns that are bumpy.
This mower comes with optional add-on features for voice control, radio link, anti-collision system and a GPS tracker in case your robot mower gets lost.
Other similar models in this WORX Landriod Robotic Mower series are available, from a unit suited to a 700m2 large lawn to one for a 2,000m2 lawn. Please note that these other models may have slightly different features.

2. Flymo EasiLife 800 Robotic Lawn Mower
The Flymo EasiLife 800 Robotic Lawn Mower is suitable for lawns up to 800m2. It’s one of the quietest robotic mowers in our review, at 59dB. You can still hear it but it won’t wake up your neighbours if you let it run early in the morning.
The Easilife 800 runs on one 18V Lithium-ion battery that’s included in your purchase. Its cutting width is a fairly narrow 16cm, but you don’t really need any wider with this lawn area as you won’t be getting stripes. The mower runs in a semi-random pattern just to avoid this and your grass just looks shorter at the end, without any visible cutting style. It handles slopes up to 35%, so that covers most bumps on domestic lawns.
You program the mower to your required schedule in one of two ways: either directly through the keypad and the screen on the top of the mower or via the app which you download to your smartphone (Android or iPhone). Your choice of mowing programs are Spot Cut, Park, Override or Second Area – the Assist-U interface helps you choose the one you need.
The mower software is also smart enough not to mow your lawn in bad weather. LawnSense and FrostSense keep the mower from leaving the recharging station in the rain and when it is frosty out. Cleaning the mower is easy – just use your garden hose to hose everything down. And if you hear a loud alarm noise coming from your mower, it’s because it’s collided with something, it’s become tilted on a bump or someone has lifted it up.
- Cordless (18V battery, included) robot lawnmower that automatically cuts up to 800 m2 of grass at a time.
- Assist-U interface lets you program your schedule on the mower and via an app on your smartphone (Android or iPhone).
- Mowing choices include Spot Cut, Override, Park or Second Area.
- The mowing station can be placed anywhere around the boundary edge, even in corners.
- LawnSense and FrostSense features adapt your mowing schedule depending on the weather.
- PassageSense helps the mower navigate around and through narrow spaces.
- Mows on inclines up to 19°/35%.
- Tilt, lift and collision sensors provide audible and text alarms.
- Cutting heights are from 20mm to 50mm.
- The cutting width is 16cm.
- Very quiet at 58dB.
- Comes with 100m of boundary wire and all the staples and connectors for that.
- Flattens grass.
The Flymo EasiLife 800 Robotic Lawn Mower handles lawns up to 800m2 with ease, including those with bumps and inclines up to 35%. It’s programmable through your smartphone (Android or iPhone) or manually into the mower keyboard. Its software is smart enough to not send out the mower when it’s raining or the ground is covered with frost.
The Flymo EasiLife 800 Robotic Lawn Mower is the Runner-up in our review. We like that it works for medium/large lawns and that its smart technology means that you don’t have to remember to overwrite its schedule when the weather’s bad.
3. McCulloch ROB 1000 Robotic Lawn Mower
The McCulloch ROB 1000 Robotic Lawn Mower easily cuts lawns up to 1000m2. The 18V Lithium-ion battery (included) lasts for a 65-minute mowing session and then recharges fully in 50 minutes. If you have another battery to swap in, you can have a non-stop grass cutting period if you need it.
The ROB 1000 mows in a semi-random pattern to avoid stripes. Robotic mowers aren’t a good choice if you’re aiming for a striped lawn along the lines of Wimbledon courts. But your lawn will look lush as the mower cuts the grass cuttings down finely and leaves them on the lawn as nutritious mulch.
You adjust the mowing schedule using the keypad and screen on the mower’s body. This McCulloch mower doesn’t come with a phone app so it’s all done manually on the mower. The curring width is a fairly narrow 17cm and you have a choice of five cutting heights in the range of 20mm to 50mm. This is a good range as the lowest height gives a fairly close trim to your lawn.
We’re particularly impressed with all the security features of this robot mower. The keypad, and hence the mower, can’t be accessed without a PIN number. The mower makes loud noises if it tilts or is lifted, either letting you know that it’s stuck on the lawn or is being taken away. In these cases, the mower stops working until you access it through the keypad (which requires the PIN number). In addition, if someone does manage to walk away with the mower, they have to take the recharging station as well as it only works with that particular one. All in all, a very comprehensive security suite.
- Robotic 18V Lithium-ion battery (included) mower that handles lawns up to 1000 m2.
- Fully and easily programmable with your preferred mowing schedule.
- Security includes a security PIN code and an anti-theft alarm.
- Cutting height is adjustable from 20mm to 50mm in five steps
- Mows in a semi-random pattern to avoid stripes.
- Cuts grass up finely and leaves it as mulch on the lawn.
- The cutting width is 17cm.
- Cuts for 65 minutes and recharges in 50 minutes.
- Comes with 200m of boundary wire and 400 staples plus all the needed connectors.
- Only one-year warranty.
- No smartphone option.
- Poor customer service.
The McCulloch ROB 1000 Robotic Lawn Mower is a mower that’s programmed manually on the mower’s keypad and screen. The cutting width is a little narrow but you do have a choice of five cutting heights, from 20mm to 50mm. The different layers of security features make it difficult for someone to make off with the mower and then use it. Although it’s not a smart robot mower – no phone app – this is a good choice if the security of your garden equipment is important to you.
4. Gardena Sileno life 1250m2, Bluetooth app
The Gardena Sileno life: Robotic lawnmower for lawns up to 1250m² pretty much explains what it does in its name. This 18V Lithium-ion battery-driven mower comes with the battery and mows for an hour on a full charge. You need to wait 65 minutes for it to recharge so it’s worth having another battery charged and ready to go if you’re around during the mowing time.
Changing the cutting height in this mower is easy and doesn’t require tools. Choose from 20mm (for a close cut) to 50mm (for a shaggier trim). The SensorCut system figures out the best random way to cut the grass so the mower doesn’t leave stripes of any length. The mower adjusts the mowing time based on the grass length and finely cuts up the grass tips for mulch that it leaves on the lawn.
Security features include sensors and loud warning noises for tilt, life and collision. If you’re around, you know if your mower is in trouble. You also receive a message to the app on your smartphone. You also need a PIN code to access the keyboard and screen which are concealed under a cover. It’s a very quiet mower that hums along at 57dB in any weather.
Programming the mower is through the keyboard and screen or via your smartphone (Android or iPhone) with the Bluetooth Gardena app. The mowing plan is designed in the set-up process. The EasyApp Control, EasyConfig and Auto-Schedule programs let you easily install and operate the mower.
Note: If you have a Gardena smart watering system, you may prefer the Gardena Sileno Life Robotic Mower 1000m2 that comes with the Smart System app that integrates seamlessly with your existing Gardena Smart System.

The Gardena Sileno life 1250m2, Bluetooth app robotic mower works well on lawns up to 1250m2. It’s very quiet and easily programmed manually on the keypad or through your smartphone app. It mows in any weather for 60 minutes on a full charge. We like that it has a generous cutting width (22cm( that makes short work of larger lawns. And, if you’re already invested in Gardena Sileno garden equipment, the 10002 model fits into your existing Smart System software.
The main advantage of a robot lawnmower is that, once you’ve set up the boundary wire and programmed the mowing times, you can walk away and let the mower look after cutting your grass. But that means that this relatively small mower is sitting out in your garden by itself. How do you know that it will be safe and how can it tell you when it needs help?
This Buyer’s Guide looks at the levels of security features that the best robot lawn mowers have.
Sensors and alarms
Most robot lawn mowers have some kind of sensors that set off a loud alarm when they’re triggered – and those that have apps, also send a message to your smartphone. Of course, the audible alarm is only of use if you’re in the neighbourhood. But the instructions for many models state that you shouldn’t leave the mowers alone when they’re working in your garden. This really isn’t as counter-intuitive as it seems, as these mowers are relatively quiet and won’t usually disturb your neighbours if you use them early in the morning or in the evening when you’re at home.
The tilt sensor triggers if your robot mower gets stuck in a bump and goes off the level ground by more than its incline maximum. That’s 20° or 35% for most of the mowers in this review. It stops and sets off the audible alarm and sends a message to the smartphone app.
If someone comes along and lifts the mower while it’s working away, the blades stop and this alarm is triggered if the mower isn’t put back down within a specified number of seconds (usually around 7 seconds or so).
If the mower hits an obstacle, perhaps a tree, child or pet, it immediately reverses out of the way and goes off on another path. Only buy a robot mower that has blades that are positioned fully underneath the mower so no one gets hurt if the mower touches them.
Loyal to one recharging base
Even if someone does make off with your mower, the best models can only operate on their paired recharging base. Look for a mower whose recharging base can be placed anywhere, perhaps tucked away in a corner of your lawn area. With the lift alarm wailing away, who’s going to stop and search around for the recharging station?
Most robot mowers need a PIN code to be entered into the keypad to turn off the alarms and to activate the mower. You can also do this from the app on your smartphone. If the mower is stolen, the person taking it won’t know the code and so can’t restart the mower.
This is more a safety feature than a security one. Some robot mowers have weather sensors or link into weather forecasts and won’t operate if it’s raining or rain is forecast. Additionally or alternatively, a FrostSensor feature keeps the mower from working if there’s frost in the ground. This protects the integrity of your lawn as well as prevents water from getting into the robot mower.
Having a robot mower to mow your lawn isn’t cheating on your lawn care, it’s using your gardening time effectively to do the tasks that do require your expertise. Whilst all the robot mowers in our review do the same job (cutting your grass), some incorporate technology more than others to program the mower via a smartphone and to figure out the most efficient mowing patterns. The size of your lawn and the technology you want is your main purchasing decisions. Our review covers a range of these choices.
Our Best Pick is the WORX WR153E L1500 Landroid Robotic Mower 1500m². You can program this mower manually or through your iPhone or Android smartphone. The intelligent software works out the most efficient and time saving mowing path to take across your lawn.
The Flymo EasiLife 800 Robotic Lawn Mower is best for medium/large lawns. It’s also programmable through a smart phone and has some pre-defined mowing programs that aid you in setting up your schedule and mowing needs.
