We tested the new TACKlLife Weed Puller to see how effect it really is
Our Rating
One problem we face as keen gardeners is keeping on top of those unwanted weeds such as dandelions, thistles and other invasive weeds. One product which many manufacturers have tried to improve and refine to deal with this very problem is the weed puller. Until now we thought the Fiskars weed puller was probably the best choice but that was until we had the chance to test the very similar, but improved and slightly cheaper, Tacklife Weed Puller. We spent several days testing this tool on a fews different lawns and flower beds to put it through its paces and first impressives, very impressive!.

Quick summary: The TACKLife Weed Puller is an innovative tool which is used to remove unwanted weeds from your lawn and garden borders and for those looking for the short answer, it really is an amazing tool and to our surprise it actually works very well. Weighing just over 1kg, it's fairly lightweight making it perfect for the elderly or anyone who suffers from painful arthritis as well as anyone who just wants to make weeding much easier. It's very easy to use and removes the whole weed in seconds, including any long tap roots and all without having to bend or kneel down, which means its also great for those with bad backs.
We found it fun and very easy to use, simply press the claws into the ground over the weed by pushing down on the foot pedal, tilt the handle back slightly which automatically engages the claws and grips the weed and root. Lift to remove the weed, to finish, simply push the orange sliding handle down and the weed will automatically be ejected. Its as simple as that and takes only a few seconds to remove the weed.

How was it delivered
It didn't come with any fancy packaging, simply had some card around the peddle and claws to give it a little protection and then it was wrapped in a good amount of bubble wrap. Arrived in perfect condition and the packing seems to have done its job.
Our TackLife Weed puller Review
We were kindly given this weed puller to review by Tacklife and have not purchased this product as we usually do. However this did not effect our review and its my own opinion and conclusion. If its total rubbish we would say its total rubbish and we make sure the manufactures know this before we review a product.
We tested for a fews weeks
With that out the way, the first thing I would like to point out is that we tested this weed puller for a good few weeks extensively on both a large lawn with plenty of weeds and on a large flower bed which was full of dandelions and other weeds so we had plenty of weeds to test it on to give us a good idea of how it performs when using extensively, i also borrowed it to a few neighbours to see what they thought.
Why we reviewed this weed puller
We regularly get asked to review garden products of which most get turned down, however after recently using the more expensive Fiskars weed puller which this model is clearly based on, we were interested to see how it compared, honestly, we think this model by Tacklife is even better because it has a slightly different claw design. We think it's better as it uses a triangular blade and two claws which we think is, one, easier to push into the ground and two, it seems to grip the weeds very well and seems to miss less weeds.
Spec & build quality
Overall, it has a total length of around 109cm which is just over 3ft long, weighing just over 1kg is very light weight which is the first thing we noticed as it looks heavier than it actually is, despite being light, it seems very well made and the materials seem to be very robust and up to the job, some of the parts including the foot peddle are made from plastic, however we don't think it would break easily as it seems very strong on further inspection.
How it works?
When the peddle is in the fully down position, the two claws are in the open position. All you need to do is put the claws over the weed and push them into the ground by pressing down on the black peddle with your foot, this drives the long 3 inch claws into the ground around the root. When you tilt the weed puller this closes the claws and traps the weed including the root.
To remove the whole weed, lift from the ground and you will see the weed has been fully removed with minimal damage to the lawn.
Push the orange slider down to eject the weed quickly and easily
The feature we really like is the weed ejection mechanism shown in the picture below which removes the weed from the claws. We had a bucket handy so we simply pushed down on the orange slider and it pushed the weed straight off the claws into the bucket.
We notice that most of the time this last process was effortless with very little pressure needed but with very large weeds it did take a little more effort to eject the weed.
Easily remove weeds without bending down which is a big plus
After using this weed puller we found you can easily spend a few hours going other a garden and we really like that you don't have to bend over or get our hands dirty.
What the neighbours thought
When I borrowed it to be neighbour who is now retired and usually struggles to remove weeds because of problems with his back which makes kneeling down very difficult (he's now 87), he commented on how much easier it was using this tool and how much quicker it was compared to weeding by hand the usual way turning a hour of weeding into 10 - 15 minutes and all without straining his back or having to get up and down from his knees.
We both found the handle is comfortable to use and it fits nicely into the palm of your hand but bare in mind that most of the pressure is applied using your foot and weight on the peddle so you only really use the handle to tilt the device and lift the weed puller.
The possible weak link in the design
The only part that looks a little vulnerable is the pushing mechanism that pushes the weed off the end of the claws as shown below, however we have seen no signs of weakness so only time will tell but hopefully this will not be a problem and it does look strong enough for what its designed to do but its most certainly the weakest part of the whole tool so it's something to be a where of so you don't knock it on a hard surface.
Final Conclusion
Just over a year ago we looked at 5 other different weed pullers of various designs and the Fiskars Weed Puller came out on top with no real competition all though there was some good alternatives that were cheaper but none where as effective, back then the Fiskars model was simply the best with no other alternative to speak of.
However, this has now changed, honestly, we would say give the TackLife Weed Puller some consideration as we think it actually does a better job and we think it's simply because it used a triangular blade and two claws with seems to work some what better than the 4 pronged design of the Fiskars model which we also found can leave larger holes on a lawn as it seems to tear the weeds out where as the Tacklife model seems to slice its way into the ground around the root and then uses the two claws to trap the weed and root against the blade.
We can't really comment on long term use just yet but the materials seem to be very high quality so we think it will last for many years. Its does come with a 30 day money back guarantee and 24 months warranty so if there are any problems at least you can contact Tacklife directly who should be able to resolve any issues.
This is one of them garden tools you don't realise you need until you have used one and you wonder how you coped before. If you no anyone who struggles bending down and weeding then its certainly worth letting them know about this amazing tool that makes weeding so much easier. Personally we would never be without one of these tools now and we don't even suffer with any back related problems.
We hope you have found our review helpful and if you have any questions or just want to comment please leave a comment below, happy gardening!
