8 Best Cordless Pressure Washers

Regarding pressure washers in general, I’ve always had electric pressure washers connected to the mains tap, which included my Karcher K2 and, more recently, the Karcher K5 with smart control. At my family’s garden centre, we’ve always used petrol pressure washers, so when these cordless pressure washers first caught my attention a few years back, I was very doubtful and wrote them off as more of a gimmick than a useful cleaning tool.

Fast forward a few years and some testing with the Worx Hydroshot shown above, and it’s a different story. It definitely won’t be replacing my Karcher K5 pressure washer pictured below, but cordless pressure washers can definitely be a fantastic tool. It all really depends on your situation and your plan to use a cordless portable pressure washer, but once you own one, you find so many uses for them.

To give you an idea, my Karcher K2 above, which is one of the smaller electric pressure washers and a very popular model, has a ‘bar’ rating for pressure of 110 bar; my Karcher K5 also show above has a pressure rating of 145 bar. Now, the WORX 20V MAX Cordless Hydroshot Portable Pressure Washer, probably the most popular portable pressure washer, has a pressure rating of only 22 bar. That is a big difference!

Even the extremely expensive Makita DHW080ZK Twin 18v Li-ion LXT Brushless Pressure Washer pictured abovee, which I would also describe as a professional tool, only has a pressure bar rating of 55 bar. I’m trying to point out that you won’t get the same cleaning power as a corded electric pressure washer. I don’t want your expectations to be too high!

However, they definitely have their uses and are very good for particular jobs. For starters, if you don’t have access to a water faucet or plug socket anywhere (although the plug socket part can be overcome with a portable generator), then using a good battery powered pressure washer is going to be your only option. It’s also a good option for anyone living in an apartment or flat who might not have the storage space or access to power or water to use an electric pressure washer.

They have proven brilliant for washing bikes down after a ride out, especially before loading them back into the car or onto a trailer. I personally also do a lot of kayaking in my ITIWIT 100 Touring Inflatable Kayak in the summer, and it’s proven perfect for washing down and cleaning off any sand or mud before letting it dry and packing it away. Basically, any time you could do rinsing something down but need a little power, it could be a dirt bike, cleaning off your mower deck, washing a boat, a 4×4 off-roader, cleaning portable BBQ, dirty patio furniture, or simply cleaning your own car; a portable pressure washer is a perfect solution and more than up to the job if you buy a suitable model.

What they are not good enough for is cleaning heavily soiled patios or paths; for this, I would suggest using a patio cleaner such as Smartseal 5L Patio Clean Xtreme that you apply and rinse off if you can’t use a more powerful mains-powered pressure washer or petrol.

Before I get into my detailed reviews of each model, I want to briefly mention a few of what I think are the best cordless pressure washers currently available. Firstly, I don’t think most people can go wrong with the WORX HYDROSHOT Pressure Cleaners; however, there are a few different models, but there is not a great deal of difference between them.

I recommend the WORX WG620E model, which is rated at 22 bar. The main issue, as with most cordless models, is run time; at 25 minutes, it’s long enough to clean a small car, but you may need to consider spare batteries or choosing a set that comes with a bigger battery, 4Ah instead of 2Ah for example. WORX also makes a version with a brushless motor called the WORX WG630E, but even this model only has 24 bar of pressure, so there is little difference in power. However, it does recharge in 1 hour instead of 4 to 5 hours. It also has a bottle adapter, which means you can attach a 2-litre soda bottle filled with water to the pressure washer. It may also come with a larger 4Ah battery instead of the 2Ah standard, unless you buy the bare tool.

I like that it comes with everything you need: a pressure washer, lance, battery, and charger; some offers even include a few more accessories, such as brushes. It’s worth noting you can put the suction tube into a bucket of water or even draw it from a river, lake or pond; this can be useful for some people. You can still attach it to your outdoor tap, which is also useful.

Now, if you already have other Ryobi tools, such as the cordless chainsaw or drill like I do, the 18v batteries and a charger will probably be compatible with the Ryobi pressure washer. In that case, investing in the Ryobi model, which gives the same performance and has a pressure rating of 22 bar, makes much more sense. It’s very similar, and then you only invest in the bare tool. Plus, being Ryobi, you know it is well designed and will be reliable, but at under £100, I think it’s a reasonable price. However, if you don’t already have other Ryobi tools. In that case, getting the Worx version probably makes more sense, as it offers better value for money with the battery and charger included.

Now, if you’re looking for a cordless pressure washer that portable and totally self-contained and includes an integrated water bucket/tank, this Greenworks 40v Cordless Pressure Washer is by far the best choice for the price. Again, everything is included, and it also has the best pressure rating of all the pressure washers includes thee Makita DHW080ZK twin powered pressure washer. It has an impressive 70 bar of pressure. It also includes a large integrated 20-litre bucket that can be detached from the main unit and filled. You can remove the bucket and attach a standard mains hose pipe if needed as well. The run time is a little low at around 20 minutes, but it’s long enough for most jobs, and you can buy a separate battery if needed. Overall, it’s a fantastic piece of kit.

One other portable pressure washer that is the closest to an electric pressure washer in terms of performance is this Makita DHW080ZK Twin 18V (36V) Li-ion LXT Brushless Pressure Washer. It has an impressive 55 bar of pressure. Plus, being Makita, it’s well made, reliable and will tackle more demanding jobs, within reason!

Now, I still wouldn’t recommend it for cleaning large patios or replacing an electric or petrol pressure washer. However, for cleaning cars or small patios, it’s perfect. It also has a large 50-litre water container. The downside is that it is heavy; you are looking at 50kg when full of water, but it is on wheels, which definitely helps. The downside is the price; it’s insanely expensive!

Even if you already have Makita tools, compatible batteries, and a charger, it’s still very expensive and needs serious consideration. I would have a hard time justifying the cost myself; however, for someone looking for a professional option, it’s worth considering

This WORX WG629E.1 HYDROSHOT Pressure Washer is probably the best choice for most people. There is also now an upgraded version with a brushless motor and a larger 4Ah battery pack which provides power with 56 bar of pressure.

Now, the original version, with its smaller 20v 2Ah max battery, is still a great choice for most people and the one I review here. It’s perfect for cleaning cars, garden furniture, garden machinery, or anything where you need a little bit of pressure washer to really shift the dirt. This battery-powered model draws water from available sources and does not have a built-in water tank (like the Bosch, Makita and Greenworks models).

I recommend getting a water container to use as the tank, or of course, you could use a bucket of water but this may not be practical if you are travelling in a car. You can get a 25-litre water container for less than £10 delivered, or even a foldable version for saving space if this is an issue. 

To effectively clean dirty surfaces, there needs to be a model that has a high psi, and this is where, for a portable model, the hydroshot really excels. This cordless water pressure washer is designed to offer a maximum psi of 320 or 22 bar. Depending on your water pressure, this could be ten times more water pressure than a standard garden hose or 3-4 times more powerful than a hose with a spray gun attached.

You can adjust the water pressure to about 100psi. This is made possible through the variable speed settings that you can adjust at any given point simply by turning to adjust the spray.

A long lance is included to maximise pressure whilst also increasing space for control. Weighing in at a measly 0.59kgs, it is light enough to carry along and is probably one of the lightest models in my review.

All these functions are powered by a 20V lithium-ion battery pack that takes 3 hours to charge up. This gives you around 20 minutes of run time on full power and 30-35 minutes on low pressure so it might be worth investing in a second battery if the run time is a concern to you, that being said one battery will last long enough to rinse two small cars or one larger 4×4.

This set of batteries can also be used by other WORX 20V products, which may be useful if you already have, or intend to buy more power tools by Worx. You end up saving money over time.

Finally, it also includes a 3-year warranty if you register online within 30 days. It is important to note that the 30 days is from the date of purchase and not upon delivery, so if it takes a while to arrive, make sure you register it straight away.

2. Ryobi 18V ONE+ Cordless 22bar Power Washer (bare tool)

This Ryobi RY18PW22A-0 18V ONE+ Cordless 22bar Power Washer comes as the bare tool, so if you already own other Ryobi tools, this is probably a no-brainer at under 100 quid.

Because it’s a bare tool, it won’t have the required battery and charger. Just be aware of this. If you don’t already have other compatible Ryobi tools then it probably makes more sense to get the Worx version with the battery and charger included, especially if you go for the more powerful upgraded Niitro version with more power.

You can use the pressure washer for 30 minutes on a single charge on any of these batteries.

This pressure washer isn’t as powerful as some of the others in this review. It produces 22 bars of pressure compared to, for example, 50 bars of pressure with the Makita DHW080ZK Brushless Pressure Washer and 70 BAR for Greenworks version. However, this just means that the Ryobi model is better suited for lighter cleaning tasks and those items that don’t have dirt ingrained into them.

One nozzle lets you choose three spray patterns for the water. The turbo nozzle is for tough cleaning jobs, the 15 degrees fan spray is the workhorse spray for general cleaning, and the shower function is for rinsing. You also receive the siphoning hose that’s 6m long. This is for drawing water from a water tank into the pressure washer. 

And while you receive the siphoning hose, you don’t get a water tank. You’re on your own to provide a bucket, a rain barrel or something else as a container for the water the washer uses. Or you can connect the hose to a water faucet and draw the water from there in a continuous stream.

My recommendation

If you’re a Ryobi fan and have other power tools in their ONE+ family of tools, the Ryobi 18V ONE+ Cordless 22 bar Power Washer is a good choice for you as you won’t have to buy the battery and the charger separately. 

While not the most powerful cordless pressure washer on the market, this model is enough for most cleaning tasks around the home and garden. All your choices of water spray patterns are conveniently available on one spray gun. But you do have to provide your own water tank.

3. Makita DHW080ZK Twin 18V (36V) Li-ion LXT Brushless Pressure Washer

The Makita DHW080ZK Twin 18V (36V) Li-ion LXT Brushless Pressure Washer is definitely worth considering if you already own some Makita’s power tools with LXT batteries. This model is a “bare tool” in that it comes without the batteries (two 6.0Ah 18V batteries are needed) and the charger. Buying these separately significantly adds to the cost of the product. Even without the bare tool, it’s still very expensive, but it’s probably the best cordless pressure washer currently available from what I’ve seen.

The Makita DHW080ZK portable pressure washer has a self-priming function so you don’t have to worry about starting the water flowing through it. It comes with a very large storage tank on wheels into which everything fits when not in use. But empty out the tank and use it for holding the water, and you’re all set to go.

With the 50L tank capacity, you get to clean for quite a while before you run out of water. And the batteries last for 34 minutes when fully charged, so that’s another limit on how long you can stand there cleaning your car, dirt bikes, paths etc. But you can tell how much battery charge you have left by checking the LED lights on the battery casing.

You also have the choice of three guns to release the water spray. There’s the trigger gun for a regular spray pattern, the jet lance for a more concentrated spray and the vario-spray lance. The last choice lets you move between the low pressure (30 bars) and the high pressure (55 bars) of water just by turning the nozzle. This is convenient when you’re cleaning something that has a variety of levels of dirt and grime.

You can use warm water up to a temperature of 40 degrees with this pressure washer. If you’d rather use water from a faucet (probably outdoors), it comes with a one touch tap connector (hozelock style). If you get your water this way, you can increase the pressure/speed of the washer up to a maximum of 80 bars for more power and oomph.

When you’ve finished your cleaning task, let excess water out of the tank by using the tap at the bottom of the front side of the tank. Then wipe the tank down, put everything back in and wheel it (it has two wheels) away to your storage place.

My recommendation

This Makita DHW080ZK Twin 18V (36V) Li-ion LXT Brushless Pressure Washer is a good choice if you already have Makita power tools and have two 6Ah batteries and the charger sitting around at home. However, even without needing to buy the batteries, it’s still very expensive, so it will not be for everyone.

However, this is a good portable pressure washer to have if you need to rely on a water tank to hold the water you use. The 50L capacity storage case/water tank of this model lets you clean a significant number of dirty items in one session assuming you have the battery power. And the three different spray guns you receive let you choose the best spray for the task at hand.

Are you looking for a pressure washer that has a bit more power, but a model that also holds the water and is 100% self-contained with everything you need all inside one unit? This Bosch Fontus Cordless Outdoor Cleaner is a great alternative to the Makita and much more affordable. You can use it to clean a number of things within and outside the house, including your dogs (on low), just don’t forget to set it to rinse before you hose them down! It runs on an 18v lithium-ion battery that is long-lasting and super energy efficient.

If you already have other 18v Bosch tools, you can even use the battery and charge from those tools and save some money just by buying the pressure washer as a bare tool, without the battery and charger. Taking up to 103 minutes, (that is just over an hour and 40 minutes to fully charge up) the batteries will then offer up to approximately 60 minutes of running time. Sixty minutes is adequate time to get a few things cleaned, so whether you are camping for the weekend and need to clean the bikes off in the evening or simply washing pram wheels off, I think it is more than long enough if you want to use it to clean your car.

To use the pressure washer, you need to fill the tank up first with 15 litres of water, yes it has a much bigger tank than any other model, so if a large water capacity is important to you, this scores high marks. These 15 litres can last a long period of time if you are only cleaning small items. If you are looking to undertake larger projects then you may need to refill the tank a few times, but with 15 litres of water, you could easily clean your car.

This model comes with two cleaning attachments, these include the nozzle and a cleaning brush. These attachments are designed to be removed or attached without too much effort. This, in turn, provides a seamless cleaning experience, even when you are trying to clean down your outdoor furniture. There is a compartment specifically designed to store the attachment when they are not in use which is a handy design feature. This will save you some headache when you are trying to store the pressure washer in a tight space and when you come to get it back out of the shed, you know where everything is.

The rotating nozzle head gives you access to different modes of water pressure. You can reduce or increase the water pressure depending on what you are cleaning. The extendable handle is also well designed and makes matters even simpler as it provides a way to drag the machine along as you clean. The handle has been padded to ensure your hands are comfortable as it can weigh well over 15kg when fully filled with water.

What does stand out with this model is the length of the hose, it is much longer than most models and this gives you that little bit more freedom. The 4-meter hose (which is over 12ft long) is detachable and has a compartment that is used to store the hose when it is not in use. The battery pack and charger are both optional and are compatible with other 18v Bosch tools. This means that if you already have other 18v Bosch tools then they should fit the pressure washer and you could then invest in the pressure washer without the battery and charger and save yourself some money.

It is worthing that this model is not the most powerful on paper, the Worx Hydroshot, which we also review in this article, has more bar pressure but the difference is probably not too noticeable. Where the Bosch Fontis really stands out is that it has a large built-in 15-litre water tank and a lengthy 60 minutes running time and short recharge time. It also has a long hose (as we have previously mentioned) so you don’t need to move it around too much if you are washing down your patio for example.

This Yard Force 22Bar 20V Aquajet Cordless Pressure Washer comes with everything that you need to start your cleaning tasks and is a great alternative to the Worx version. Well, you probably need to charge the battery and definitely fill the collapsible water bucket, but that’s it.

As well as the battery and charger, it comes with a 3-in-1 cleaning wand. The nozzle of this wand has three adjustable sprays.  The jet spray gives you a wide fan shaped spray, the turbo spray puts out a high pressure spiral spray and the low pressure spray is for a lighter spray, used for easy cleaning tasks. You also get a brush for when you do need to scrub something clean and a soap dispenser for when you need to lather the object up, when cleaning your car for example.

As well as your choice of spray pattern, you choose from two speeds of water. The normal speed is the one you use the most for many cleaning tasks. But there’s also an Eco (economy) mode. Using this choice uses less water and less battery power. Your cleaning session lasts longer in this case.

The collapsible bucket that comes with this pressure washer looks rather small in the sales photos. No capacity volume is mentioned in the sales blurb. So you probably need to provide your own water tank for longer cleaning tasks or use water from a faucet for a continuous stream..

And the handle of the power washer adjusts to two positions for both your comfort and for ease of reaching into tight corners and nooks.

Clean anything, anywhere, using the Greenworks G40DC40 Cordless Pressure Washer that is designed to offer optimal performance and I think it provides the right balance between power and practicality.

The high-pressure washer uses a 40v lithium-ion battery to power the motor and its actually the most powerful pressure washer in my review. You can move from one corner of the property to the other, cleaning various surfaces without restriction, and it is fully self-contained with a built water bucket. You can also take it on the move as it is fairly compact, making it useful for cleaning off bikes before putting them back onto your bike rack, cleaning off gear after camping. Alternatively, it is also practical for cleaning cars and vans where you might not have direct outdoor access to electricity and water, for example, if you live in a flat.

If you already own other Greenworks products that use the 40V battery then you do not need to purchase another battery because the batteries within the group are interchangeable, this is becoming fairly commonplace for cordless tools. You will need to purchase a battery and a charger if you are not familiar with this brand as they are not supplied with the pressure washer.

This brings us to the run time. If you go for the smaller 40v 2Ah battery capacity, you will probably be disappointed with the run time. With this in mind, we recommend spending that bit extra and purchasing the larger 40v 4Ah battery and this should give you around 30 minutes running time from a single charge.

This pressure washer is equipped with a 20-litre tank, whether it is enough from a single fill will depend on what job you are doing. If you are cleaning a car, bikes and undertaking general clean downs it should be fine. If it is not, you could also carry a separate 20-litre tank to refill the pressure washer tank when needed.

With a water flow rate of 300l/h and 70 bar pressure, you can easily dislodge tough stains on different surfaces whether indoors or outdoors, but it’s important to not compare the power to a powerful electric model such as the karcher K5 as they are designed for different uses. But for most people, this should be plenty powerful enough.

It is not a particularly heavy model at 7.9kg, therefore, manoeuvering it around should not be an issue. The model is fitted with a handle to allow you to move it around without too much effort and the tank can be removed to make it even more compact for storage.

Finally, this model has a long 6-meter hose that provides adequate reach, permitting you to work freely and reach those tough corners. This is much better than most starter main pressure washers such as the Karcher K2 that usually have only 4 meters of hose. 

There is a jet nozzle supplied that releases water and has high pressure to clean different surfaces and the trigger handle is padded to provide cushioning as the user continuously grips it, which we think is a nice finish.

For those who are not near taps or electricity, you will be pleased to know that this pressure washer can use water from any source. Whether you are near a river or pond, you can fetch water easily using the bucket on the top section of the water. This feature allows for this pressure washer to be carried anywhere, whether for camping or cleaning the grill after a hearty barbecue. At the end of the day, you will find that this pressure washer will handle light-heavy work with unbeatable grace.

If you are always outdoors traversing the landscape, then the Kärcher OC3 Portable Cleaner is the model you need, to sum it up, it is small and compact so can easily be stored in the back of the car, has good pressure, probably slightly more than a hose and spray gun.
