If you need a ladder you can store in the smallest of spaces and still reach new heights, a good set of telescopic ladders is the way to go, best of all, some even turn into A frame step ladders

If you're looking for a good set of telescopic ladders and are doing a little research to find out which is actually the best telescopic ladder, you're in the right place. Over the last 3 years, we have reviewed around 15 telescopic ladders and have put countless hours into research to ensure we only recommend the very best and safest ladders. Its important to know that not all telescopic ladders are the same. We even found that some models are actually very dangerous and should not even be available for sale. We now have 5 models which we recommend, with prices from around £80 for a good set of standard telescopic ladders to around £170 for a good set of telescopic ladders that double as A-Fame step ladders, they has never been more affordable.

Where telescopic ladders really excel is in there ability to fold down to a very small and compact size. Some models found down to as little as 80cm making them perfect for placing in the boot of a car or storing under the stairs or on a small cupboard. Some models can be extended one step at a time making them extremely versatile, specially in more confined spaces., meaning they can be set to any height and can also fold over to double as a pair of step ladders, another great feature is that some models can even be used on stairs or uneven surfaces, as a step ladder as each side can be extended to different sizes. Remember now all models can do all this as some are just telescopic ladders only.

Our 'Best Pick' the Worhan 5.6m Telescopic Ladder, which you can find a quick summary of below, is one such ladder than can be used as a step ladder and each rung can be extended independently to any height making it a very versatile ladder which an impressive fully extended reach. In terms of build quality and ease of use as well as features, we couldn't find a better telescopic ladder which is why it was awarded our 'Best Pick', its more expensive than most other models but we think its worth the extra cost as you are getting two ladders in one and the build quality is up there with the very best models.

Telescopic Ladder Buyers Guide

What to take into consideration when choosing a telescopic ladder

A word of warning, we noticed that pretty much all telescopic ladders when fully extended are not as solid and stable as a standard pair of ladders. They all seem to bend a little and bow in the middle when fully extended, this can be a little worrying at first but this is how they are designed to be and as long as you but a solid pair that conform to EN-131 and CE standards, you shouldn't have any problems.

Telescopic ladders have become very popular in recent years, mainly due to their compact, light weight innovative design and versatility. However with so many models available, it can be hard to work out which models are not only safe to use, but also manufactured to the highest standards. There are also different features telescopic ladders have, which cheaper models may lack such as the ability to fold into a A-Frame to form step ladders or be able to be extended step by step and not used fully extended. Some models have to be to fully extended to lock in place so its important to take this into consideration.

During our research, we found that there are lots if cheap imports on the market, some even look like they might not even confirm to EN-131 and CE standards as they had not marking on the ladders, which is not only illegal, it could also mean your not insured should you have a accident and needed to claim on your home or business insurance. They can also be extremely dangerous and you can be risking serious injury just by using them. Its simply not worth the risk.

With this in mind, below we go over what to look for to ensure you buy one of best telescopic ladders and which is the right model for you, for example there is no point in paying extra for a pair that double as step ladder if you're not going to use this feature.

Our Runner-Up Model

This model is our second best model for those looking for a pair that double as a step ladder. This ladder’s 5m height at full extension dwarfs many telescopic ladders out there. The ladder can even fold into an A design for those applications that require increased stability and need to use them like step ladders. Some of its safety-enhancing features include a stabiliser bar, slip-resistant rungs and non-slip bottom caps.

From 88cm to 500cm at full length, more affordable than our best pick

This model is our second best model for those looking for a pair that double as a step ladder. This ladder’s 5m height at full extension dwarfs many telescopic ladders out there. The ladder can even fold into an A design for those applications that require increased stability and need to use them like step ladders. Some of its safety-enhancing features include a stabiliser bar, slip-resistant rungs and non-slip bottom caps. After work is complete, this telescopic ladder collapses down to 88cm for easy storage. Its not quite in the same league as our Best Pick by Worhan but its a good choice for those looking for a cheaper but safe alternative, perhaps home users. Overall a great set of ladders. Just watch your fingers as you close the ladder down as care must be taken.

Classes/Certification of Telescopic Ladders - Ensure the ladder conforms to European and UK standards

All ladders sold in the UK should be manufactured to specified standards that ensures they are safe to use and have passed certain safety standards. There are actually 3 separate standards of classification. The 3 classifications are: Class 1, Class EN131 and Class III.

Class 1 are designed for industrial use, Class EN131 are suitable for commercial light trade work and heavy duty DIY use and Class 3 if designed for domestic tasks.

We recommend buying ladders that are at least Class EN131 rated as they are the significantly safer option and offer the quality you can appreciate, while still offering the best value for money. The other reason is insurance companies will insist you use at least 'EN131 rated ladders' as they will not pay out, should you have an accident on ladders that are not up to standard. Colour identification is often used on the rubber feet of ladders and steps and/or attached user instructions and warning labels. As a general rule all ways look for a EN131 rating.

Step by step extension

All good  telescopic ladders will extend 'step by step', this means, you can set the ladders to your desired height, this is very useful in confined spaces where a fully extended set of ladder simply would not fit. Each rung will lock separately, we only recommend ladders with this feature. Its important to realise that some 'cheaper models', have to be fully extended before it locks in place. We would strongly advise against ladders that cannot be used at different heights.

Finger pinch protection

Some models feature 'finger pinch protection',this is a nice feature to have, it simply prevents you from trapping your fingers when you retract the ladder, and as you will find, they can retract fast. A simple feature, but not found on all models.

Models that convert to step ladders

Some models 'fold in half', they can be converted into step ladders. Most models that have this feature, also have the ability to extend each side independently, this means they can be used on uneven surfaces and on stairs. A great feature for any tradesman or home user.

Look for a ladder with a stabiliser included

The stabiliser is a simple aluminium bar that fits to the bottom of the ladder and provides more stability. Not all ladders include the stability bar but I think its essential, specially for longer ladders. Cheaper ladders often don't have a stabiliser, simply to save on cost.

Look for gripped rubber feet

Again this is a safety feature that helps prevent the ladder from slipping on a range of surfaces. It also helps prevent marking the floor, it may surprise you, but not all ladders have this simple feature which is essential from a safety point of view at the very least.

Build quality which included main frame as well as locking components and plastic casing

Some ladders are made from low quality materials. Usually low quality models, are easy to spot by their low prices. If you see a ladder that are significantly cheaper to other similar models, buy with caution as there is usually a reason their so cheap, usually because they are made from poor quality materials that are often not up to standard.

ALSO GREAT

We settled on the Todeco - Telescopic ladder, Foldable Ladder for this purpose. Whilst this one doesn’t fold into an A-frame ladder, it offers a great extendable height up to 3.8m, ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.

Excellent for home use, can be used at different heights and affordable

The Todeco Telescopic ladder is overall a good affordable model which is perfect for home use, not the tallest set we have reviewed but still at nearly 13ft, there tall. Whilst this one doesn’t fold into an A-frame ladder, it offers a great extendable height up to 3.8m, ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. This ladder’s aluminium alloy construction makes it lightweight and durable. It folds down by simple button presses and has quit a smooth closing mechanism. Supplied with it is a handy bag for transporting it in its compact size. This is truly a practical space-saving telescopic ladder, not the cheapest but certainly one of the best.

WORHAN 5.6 Telescopic Ladder folded into step ladders
WORHAN 5.6 Meter Telescopic ladders fully extended

The ability to fold the ladders in half in what we call an A-Frame to form step ladders, with the added flexibility to shorten and extend each end individually, means its ideal for working on stairs and uneven surfaces where more conventional ladders would not be suitable. This again is a feature which some people, specially tradesmen will find very useful as they often use them in lots of different location at different jobs so flexibility is very important.

It fully extends to a very impressive 5.6 meters (18.5ft) and when converted into step ladders, is a very impressive 270cm (8' 10''). These are the longest ladders on our review and probably one of the longest you can actually buy.

At 20kg, their fairly light weight, you can get lighter models but most are not as well built or as robust, this combined with its impressive folded down size of 95x49x20cm, which means its very easy to transport in the boot of a car, as well as being easy to store in confined spaces such as in a small cupboard or under the stairs.

Simply open to the height required which gives greater manoeuvrability, specially in smaller spaces. it also comes with an added stabiliser bar for further support to give the ladder more stability and support. Finally the large rubber grip pads, ensure a solid grip on all working surfaces.

We could not really fault these Telescopic ladders by WORHAM, they are clearly constructed to the highest quality and it extends smoothly and is very versatile..

Our recommendation

These are by far the best telescopic ladders we have reviewed but they come at a higher price, they are the tallest set so we expected them to be more expensive, however they are clearly constructed to the highest quality and it extends smoothly and are very versatile.

We were very impressed with how it can be converted to a step ladder so easily, and its ability to extend each side individually is a big bonus as they can be used on steps, this is great for anyone working on stairs or areas where the ground is not level. As mentioned, Its also one of the tallest telescopic ladders we have seen and could easily reach the roof of most homes for maintenance jobs.

Overall, a good sturdy telescopic ladder that we have no problem awarding the 'Best Pick' award to, its also confirms to the all important EN-131 safety standard, which means it suitable for commercial / trade use as well as home use.

Its also available in a slightly smaller and slightly more affordable 5 meter version which you can buy on Amazon.co.uk here.

Overall if your after a telescopic ladder that doubles as step ladders and are looking for the very best in quality and design, no other models we have seen could match those made by Worhan. We have no problems recommending these fantastic ladders, worth every penny.

If you looking for a more affordable set, then our next pick by Autobaba could be better suited, however we would not recommend them for heavy daily use, for that we only recommend the Worhan models.

So whether you want to use it at home or from site to site, this 5m ladder is worth investing in.

It compacts down to 88cm in order to take very little space and could easily be stored in a garden storage box, unlike traditional ladders that are hard to hide in small spaces. This ladder like a lot of models has Velcro straps designed to lock it when fully retracted, its not a great design they could do with something a little more substantial but they do the job, over time though we are not sure how they will fair.

This ladder has been designed with safety in mind, thanks to solid rubber feet that won’t slip even on wet surfaces, still best to have someone at he bottom though, and a stabiliser bar that ensures stability in every position.

Our recommendation

The Autobaba 5m Portable A-Frame Aluminium Telescopic Ladder offers a fantastic maximum height, thus enabling you to perform a range of tasks. You can easily wash windows, clean the gutter, paint a wall, and do house decoration, specially in the folded position as step ladders.

The aluminium frame is strong yet fairly lightweight for its size for easy handling, whilst a stabiliser, non-slip angled foot, non-slip bottom cap and slip-resistant rung ensure maximum safety during use.

The ladder is easy to use and suits the needs of many. Just be careful when lowering the ladder as it can catch your fingers if your not careful. If you are looking for a slightly longer telescopic ladder which also folds to make a set of step ladders, then we highly recommend this set. Overall an excellent ladder for the price, much cheaper than our 'Best Pick', just remember we wouldn't really recommend for professional use, we feel its not quite robust enough for daily use.

Final  Conclusion

As you may have already realised, there is a lot of choice when it comes to choosing a telescopic ladder but when you start reading reviews online, you quickly realise that there is also many disappointing models available which we hope we have helped you avoid.

We hope we have made it easier for you to choose the best telescopic ladder for your own needs, the first choice you probably need to make is whether you need a ladder than also folds into a A Frame to form a step ladder, these models can be more expensive but can be worth the extra cost.

The second point you need to consider is how tall do you need the ladder to extend to, if you're only using it as a loft ladder a smaller 3.2 meter model would be fine but if you intend to use it outdoors for gutter cleaning etc, you will need a lather model, probably a 5.6m model.

The WORHAN 5.6m telescopic folding ladders is probably the best ladder for anyone looking for a model that has a longer extension range and doubles as a step ladder, its more expensive but it worth the extra cost for most people, specially professional tradesmen. The build quality also really stands out compared to most other models.

If you looking for a more affordable model with the same features, the Autobaba 5m A-Frame Telescopic Folding Ladder is a good alternative, however its slightly smaller at 5 meters and if we're really honest, the build quality is not quiet as good as the Worham model, its noting its much more affordable though.

For those looking for a standard telescopic ladder, we were really impressed with the Todeco 3.8m Telescopic Ladders and Charles Bentley 3.2m Telescopic ladders respectably. Both are very well made, with the latter just being slightly smaller when fully extended.

We have already mentioned this earlier in the post but we will mention it again, we found no ladders that did not bow slightly in the middle when fully extended, this is usually most peoples complaints when it comes to telescopic ladders. However, most models are designed to do this and are still very safe and pass all Class EN131 tests, this is the price we seem to pay for a versatile ladder than can go to 5.6m from only 90cm.

Thats it from us, we hope we have been able to help you choose the best extendable ladder for you.
