Your complete guide to choosing a log splitter, what you need to know and our top rated models including electric, petrol and manual models

After a long time coming, we have now revamped our log splitter buyers guide and dug deep into the world of log splitters, after many more hours of research, have now added two, very impressive log splitters to our recommended list.

One of the models is the Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Log Splitter which certainly is an amazing machine in terms of performance and speed. Rather than using hydraulic systems like most models, it uses a kinetic flywheel which can split wood in approximately 3 seconds, which is incredibly fast, we think this is the future of log splitters as it saves hours of time and is very easy to use. Don’t forget to check out our review further down

One of the easiest and safest ways to cut logs into manageable pieces of firewood, is to use a log splitter. They come in 3 main powered types, manual, which requires a lot of effort but is often the cheapest type with prices starting at around £50, electric, which are fantastic as there’re literally maintenance free and split logs easily and effortlessly. Finally you can get powerful petrol models which usually split logs much faster but on the downside are noisy, require maintenance such as oil changes, cleaning filters, and other general engine maintenance.

After countless hours of research, over the last 4 years, we have seen many models and think electric log splitters are the way to go for most people, They are the easiest to use and maintenance free compared to petrol models. After taking everything into account of what most people need in a log splitter, we think that the best log splitter for most people is the Forest Master FM10 Electric Log Splitter. Our favourite the FM10 produced a similar splitting force as larger, more expensive models, thanks to its ‘duocut blade’, it has one of the largest splitting diameters, capable of splitting logs up to 500mm and was one of the best priced log splitters on the market.

Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Impact Electric Log Splitter

Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Log Splitter

Fastest log splitter currently on the market

Relying on slow hydraulic log splitters to split wood is fine for splitting small piles of logs everynow and again. If however, you have large piles of logs you split regulary, we would recommend investing in the the Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Log Splitter which uses kinetic energy to split logs almost instantly. It is powerful enough to slice through thick and knotty wood with ease thanks to the 8.5 ton impact created.

Additionally, it has a ram that snaps back in under a second to make room for the next log that needs splitting. This basically means you can constantly be loading and splitting logs every few seconds.

Compared to the other hydraulic models, this is very impressive and by far the fastest log splitter currently available. For those who need a reliable and robust log splitter, this model will serve you well, however, it’s fairly expensive but may be well worth the extra cost for some people as you can split over 500 logs an hour.

Top 8 Best Log Splitter Reviews

1. Forest Master FM10 DUOCUT Log Splitter

BEST PICK

Buy from Amazon.co.uk

The Forest Master FM10, is one of several models 'Forest Master' manufacture and I feel this model will be the best choice for most home users. The DUOCUT blade, does a brilliant job, and is one of the features that 'sets it apart from other models', which are in the same price range. Because its capable of splitting logs up to 50mm (which is twice that of most other similar log splitters), and can take logs up to 52mm long, again this is just as long as even some of the larger log splitters, it offers excellent value for money, without compromising of performance or quality.

The ‘Forest Master FM10 DUOCUT Log Splitter’ is powered by a powerful 2200 watt motor which produces 5 tons of splitting pressure. This is more than enough to split most logs and is perfect for the home user splitting a few logs. The powerful electric motor, combined with the ‘Patented Duocut Blade’, means, it will split logs from both ends. This is the real standout feature here when you compare it to cheaper models that also advertise 5 tons of splitting pressure, of course the quality and workmanship is also very good and more importantly, very strong to help avoid the frame from twisting under all the pressure which is a common problem with cheaper models where they have cut corners on the actual gage of the metal.

Forest Master FM10 5t Electric Duocut Log Splitter Complete Set from back

Not only does splitting logs from both ends speed up splitting time, it also means that it can split logs up to an impressive 50mm in diameter. Because of this, the ‘FM10’ is comparable to larger 10 ton models that only split logs from one side.

In terms of power and max splitting diameter and length. (To put things into prospective, most similar models with split logs up to 25mm, which is half of what this model can split)

Powered by a powerful 2200 watt motor which produces 5 tons of splitting pressure

Pros

  • Perfect for the home user looking for a good reliable log splitter for splitting many different sized logs.
  • Splitting ability comparable to a 10 ton, when used with the ‘Duocut blade’.
  • Comes complete with stand, no more bending down to split logs.
  • Two handed operation, passes all important safety regulations which ensures it very safe to you.
  • Maximum log length it can split – 45cm
  • Maximum splitting diameter of logs that it can safely spit – 50cm
  • At 47kg, is fairly heavy but it needs to be to ensure it up to the job but it also incorporates wheels to make moving it around easier.
  • The stand’s length adjusts up to 84cm and gives a working height of 73cm putting less strain on your back.
  • Comes with 1 years warranty for full peace of mind.

Conclusion

The Forest Master FM10 Log Spliter, is one of several models that ‘Forest Master’ manufacture and after much debate, we feel this model will be the best choice for most home users as it has more than enough splitting power for even the largest of logs and is very easy and safe to use.

The DUOCUT blade which enables it to split logs from both sides does a brilliant job and is one of the features that ‘sets it apart from other branded models’ n the same price range.

Where this model stands out, is that its capable of splitting logs up to 50mm, don’t forget that most other 5 ton models can only split logs up to 25mm so this is a big advantage.

This model also has a good log length capacity and can take logs up to 52mm long, again this is just as long as some of the larger more powerful log splitters.

When you take all this into account, it pretty obvious that it offers excellent value for money without compromising on its performance or quality.

Overall, this model cannot be faulted as we think it is the best choice for most people looking to split logs at home. When it came to deciding which model deserved to be name our ‘Best Pick’, we decided that this model would have to be the winner because not only is it performance and quality standout features, the price is also one of the most affordable and its not often we see a product that has all 3.

That being said if you have large amounts of logs to split and need someone will a little more speed, our next pick which we have only just received is very impressive and will split logs in seconds, however its more expensive but what an amazing log splitter, definitely worth considering if you have the extra budget.

2. Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Impact Electric Log Splitter

Fastest log splitter on the market

Buy from Mowers-online.co.uk

Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Impact Electric Log Splitter

Get through a large pile of logs with the Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Log Splitter in the fraction of the time it would take with a hydrollic log splitter thanks to the kinetic energy it produces using the two large flywheels. To give you can idea of how fast this model can split logs, you can split around 3 logs in the time it takes a hydrollic model to split just 1 log.

This model is powered by a 1.5kW motor that is responsible for driving the ram to split wood at a force of 8.5 tons which is enough force to deal with most logs up to 400mm long and 300mm in diameter. As mentioned, this model uses kinetic energy which is a fairly new concept to split the logs faster than most other models in the market. The only comparable model in this review is the Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter which we review further down which is slightly cheaper but has a slightly smaller splitting force on 7 tons. This model to compare has an impact of 8.5 tonnes which one can slice through knotty wood like a hot knife through butter.

To operate the log splitter requires two hands which doubles as a safety feature, one initiates the drive mechanism and the other releases the ram. The ram once released, snaps back quickly by pulling the lever back so you can load the next next log or split the log again if needed, this all happens in a few seconds. This saves you time, especially if you have a large pile of logs to get through which is where this model can become really valuable and is well worth the extra investment.

Fitted with wheels, and trust us when we say its needs them, it weights a back breaking 73kg. However thanks to teh wheel and the stable front structure, you can set up anywhere and get to work. However, there is one small issue, as mentioned is very heavy which can be a problem taking it up steps. This shouldn’t be a proiblem for most people but it worth baring this in mind.

However, the padded handles make it easier to transport the machine from one place to the next with ease. This simple but effective log splitter comes with a 1-year warranty for full peace of mind.

Pros

  • Splits logs super quickly compared to hydrollic log splitters.
  • Powerful 1500W motor can split through the largest logs effortlessly.
  • Uses kinetic energy to release 8.5 tonnes of impact to split the wood in seconds.
  • Features wheels for easy mobility.
  • Has a short log splitting cycle under 1 second.
  • Easy to set up and operate with two handled design, simply plugin and load the log and your ready to split logs.
  • Accompanied by a 1-year warranty for full peace of mind.

Conclusion

Offering as much splitting force as our best pick is the Portek Charger Quiksplit 8.5 Ton Log Splitter and what a machine is speed is what you want to measure. The log splitter packs up to 8.5 tons of pressure to split wood into usable sizes. With a short cycle of under one second, there is no time to dilly-dally, you can split as many logs as you can. The only reason this super fast model is not our ‘Best Pick’ is down to cost, its nearly twice the price of a hydrllic log splitter, however, its also twice as fast at splitting logs.

That is why we would recommend this model to anyone who needs to split logs a lot faster. With other models relying on hydraulic mechanisms to provide the needed impact, this model only relies on kinetic energy to split the wood. If you need a fast log splitting model, we would suggest you look no further than this model, we feel that the extra investment will be well worth the extra cost if you can get the use out of it to warrant the axtra cost.

3. Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter

Split Timber Wood In Seconds – 5 x Times Faster Than Hydraulic Log Splitters

Buy from Amazon.co.uk

Whether you want to split kiln dried wood for immediate use in your log burner or chop green wood for storage, the Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter does it all. This compact beast is very powerful with 7 tonnes of force and uses advanced flywheel kinetic technology for splitting logs much faster than most models. Besides, you will love the ease of use and quiet operation. The fitted wheels are additionally handy and the steel body itself doesn’t demand any maintenance.

The Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter is a more powerful and bulkier version of the Logmaster 6 Ton Hydraulic model we review next. At 60kgs, this log splitter weighs a lot more than the 6 Ton model, whilst being a few inches longer and wider in dimensions (115.5L x 30W x 68H cm). It certainly produces more pressure force at 7 tons but other than that, it shares the same stainless steel construction with a streamlined frame.

What makes this model really standout from every other log splitter in our review is that this model utilises kinetic flywheel technology which eliminates the need for oil and hydraulics in its operation, this means you never need to worry about hydraulic leaks etc. In this set up, the flywheel, in other words a rotating disc, converts electrical energy into kinetic energy which it stores and releases in a sudden burst when needed to quickly drive the ra and split the log in seconds. That’s precisely what you need to split a log. The speed of the rotating flywheel combines with the 7 ton pressure force for quick splitting action, resulting to more efficient log splitting. This log splitting technique is actually around 5  times faster than any other hydraulic action log splitter which most other models are.

Safety on and off switch to send power to the motor.

As you can see below, with so much force and speed involved, they have taken safety to the next level. With separate on and off switches to power the motor, you also need to to use two levers at the same time to power the ram. You simply push the big lever forward, followed by the second small lever which activates the ram, this ensures your hands cannot be anywhere near the ram when it activates which is very important for safety reasons.

Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter Split Timber Wood In Seconds, 5 X Times Faster Than Hydraulic Log Splitters by

The kinetic log splitter handles almost all kinds of logs including knotty seasoned wood and freshly cut wood. It splits logs to a maximum length of 15 inches (400mm) and 12 inches (300mm) diameter. The tool is rated to operate on 230V mains power and it comes with a 1.6m electric cord. The cord is pretty short for working far from a mains outlet so you might consider purchasing an extension cord if need be but be sure to by one that can handle the electricity output.

Push the large lever followed by the second lever to activate the ram and split the log.

Fitted with wheels, this unit is easily movable from site to storage when not in use. Working with the log splitter is as simple as pressing a button, followed by pushing the two levers and getting away the pieces once they’re split. You will also appreciate the very quiet operation of this tool.

Also important to mention is that the model has a 12-month guarantee for full peace of mind.

Pros

  • The incorporated Flywheel technology splits wood in a matter of seconds.
  • Higher splitting force of 7 tonnes delivers more efficient results than ‘weaker’ models.
  • Comes with wheels for easy transportation.
  • The unit is easy to work with due to simple two lever operation.
  • Maintenance-free steel construction thanks to not using any hydraulic rams.
  • Splits all kinds of wood; seasoned, knotty, green wood or dried.
  • 12 month warranty for full peace of mind.
All in all, this log splitter is a great buy if you deal with different kinds of logs and a lot of them too. It will save the labour and significantly cut the time of hydraulic splitters, leave alone regular wood splitting axes.

Conclusion

Whether you want to split kiln dried wood for immediate use in your log burner or chop green wood for storage for the following year, the Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter does it all. This compact beast is very powerful with 7 tonnes of force and uses advanced flywheel kinetic technology for splitting logs much faster than all other models we have reviewed, nothing even comes close in terms of speed, its simply amazing. Besides, you will love the ease of use and quiet operation.

It is heavy, much heavier than most other models so its nice to see fitted wheels, overall it should be fairly easy for most people to move around, maybe more difficult on gravel but on a solid surface you want have any problems.

The steel body itself doesn’t demand any maintenance and its nice to see they have found a good alternative to hydraulic log splitters.

The only thing we could say is that it could do with a longer electric cord. As it stands you will be forced to purchase an extension cord for improved freedom of manoeuvring around.

All in all, this log splitter is a great buy if you deal with different kinds of logs and a lot of them too. It will save the labour and significantly cut the time of hydraulic splitters, leave alone regular wood splitting axes.

So why didn’t we name this our new ‘Best Pick’ this year, two reasons really, firstly, the price, its around £100 more than our best pick and in reality, the only advantages it has over our ‘Best Pick’ is you can split logs much faster and maybe less risk of problems with the hydraulic ram, however, in reality the hydraulic ram is unlikely to break anyway. Our ‘Best Pick’ also has an advantage over this model too, this models splits logs up to 300mm in diameter, our best pick will split logs up to 500mm which is much larger.

That being said, if most of your logs are under 300mm which is a pretty big log anyway, and you want to drastically speed up your log splitting speed, then this model is certainly without a doubt the best choice. It it had a larger splitting diameter, we might have even named it our ‘Best Pick’.

Conclusion

Overall it’s an excellent log splitter and has over 100 fantastic reviews on Amazon which supports our own conclusion. Its perfect for home owners who have a few logs to split on the weekends but is probably not up to splitting large numbers of logs often, for this we recommend paying a little more.

The only negative point about this model, and this is only when compared to the Forest Master FM10 our ‘Best Pick’. The maximum splitting diameter is 250mm, on the FM10 thanks to its ‘duecut blade’, its an amazing 500mm which you can’t simply ignore, this is a huge advantage.

Taking this into consideration, whether this matters to you depends on the size of logs you will be splitting. Most people probably split logs no bigger than 25cm in diameter, specially people at home splitting a few logs, if this is the case, ‘The Handy Log Splitter’ is still a great log splitter to consider when purchasing a log splitter for the first time.

5. Forest Master FN16 – 8 Ton Log Splitter

BEST HEAVY DUTY MODEL FOR PROFESSIONAL USE

Buy from Amazon.co.uk

The ‘Forest Master FM16 Log Splitter’ is powered by a very powerful 2300 watt motor, that produces an impressive ‘8 tons of splitter pressure’, however when combined with the ‘Duocut blade’ we have also talked about earlier, means its comparable to a 16 ton log splitter.

It can be run in either single blade mode or twin blade mode. When in twin blade mode, it splits the logs from both end using the ‘duocut blade’ that is attached to the other end of the log splitter, this helps log which might be harder to split with just one blade.

When used in single blade mode without the duocut blade attached, it will split logs up to 520mm long with a maximum diameter of 300mm. When you use the log splitter in twin blade mode, the maximum spitting length is reduced to 43cm, but the maximum diameter is increases to a very impressive 600mm (24 inches) which is a seriously large log, basically the splitting length is slightly smaller, but the splitting diameter is doubled for dealing with the sort of logs no other electric log splitter could split.

Other improvements with this model include the two speed option, with the fasted doing a full stroke in only 5 seconds, this means you can split the smaller to average sized logs much more quickly, however, when you come across the odd larger log, you can switch the speed to slow to help split the log easier and safer.

This model is very heavy duty and is designed to be very sturdy and as such it weights 81kg so to help move this around it has been designed with 4 wheels rather than the standard two. This means you don’t have to left it up to move, just roll it to where you need it.

Pros

  • Comes complete with heavy duty stand, this makes it easier to manoeuvre and reduced the need to bend down to load logs.
  • Two handed operation puts safety first, passes all important safety regulations.
  • 2 Speeds – Takes 5 seconds for one cycle and has a slower speed to help split larger logs.
  • Maximum log length it can split – 520mm.
  • Maximum splitting diameter – 600mm.
  • Product weight: 81kg.
  • CE approved Weather protected to IP54 15 second cycle time.
  • Fitted with castors wheels for better manoeuvrability.
  • Supplied with a 3 year warranty for your extra peace of mind.

Conclusion

The Forest Master FM16 Log Splitter is the largest log electric log splitter we have reviewed, it’s also the most powerful by far in terms of what it capabilities are, in regards to splitting power and versatility. This is without doubt the most powerful electric log splitter we have reviewed.

At just under twice the price of our ‘Best Pick’, the FM10, its little brother, its also just over twice the weight, but has nearly twice the splitting power. To sum it up, your’e getting twice as much log splitter for your hard earned money.

Is it worth the extra cost?, if your looking for the very best electric log splitter, something that will split anything you put in front of it with ease, the short answer is yes. Its certainly well made and is a real work horse designed with day to day work in mind.

This model is really for two types of people, the first is anyone who needs to split lots of logs on a daily basis and fast. This model will split logs day after day, no problem. This is also ideal for anyway who has very large logs to split, up to 60cm in diameter which is double that of most other electric log splitters.

Overall, if your serious about splitting logs, this would be a great investment even though its fairly expensive, however it used regularly it will give good value for money.

6. Forest Master FM9 – 5 Ton Log Splitter

BEST SMALL AFFORDABLE LOG SPLITTER

Buy from Amazon.co.uk

This Forest Master FM8 is the cheapest log splitter we have reviewed and at under £200 (at time of writing), it offers excellent value for money. Its a very popular model, and all though it lacks the size of some of the larger log splitters, its more than efficient for splitting most logs.

The Forest Master FN9 Log Splitter is smaller entry level log splitter, designed with home owners with small fires and wood burning stoves in mind and for those looking for a model that want take up to much space.

This small, but powerful log splitter, produces 5 tons of splitting power and can split logs up to 370mm long with a maximum diameter of 250mm.

The manufactures ‘Forest Master’ also state that it saves 50% on electricity, when compared to similar 2 lever electric log splitters but this is something we couldn’t personally measure.

5 TON ELECTRIC LOG SPLITTER HYDRAULIC WOOD TIMBER CUTTER 2200WATT MOTOR

Pros

  • 5 Ton log splitter for those looking for a powerful but smaller model.
  • Ideal for home owners with small fires and wood burning stoves.
  • Two handed operation, puts safety first and passes all important safety regulations.
  • Maximum log length it will split – 37cm
  • Maximum splitting diameter – 25cm
  • CE approved Weather protected to IP54
  • Product dimensions: Length 78cm x width 27cm
  • Product weight: 37kg

Conclusion

This Forest Master FM9 Log Splitter used to be the cheapest log splitter we had reviewed a couple of years back, however the price seems to have risen by around £50 which means it now a similar to price some of the more powerful models that comes with stands.

However, it offers excellent value for money for those looking for a smaller model. Its still seems to be a very popular model, all though it lacks the size of some of the larger log splitters, its more than efficient for splitting most logs.

This model does not come with a stand or the ‘duocut blade’ which many of the other Forest Master models come with, however they can be purchased separately, the problem is this would probably not make much sense as it would then cost more than some of the more powerful models that come with these as standard.

With this in mind, you might want to make sure you have a table to put it on, a Black & Decker work station or similar is ideal for this if you all ready have one. With this in mind, if your thinking of buying the extra stand and blade, then the Forest Master FM10 Log Splitter would be a more suitable choice and would save you some money at the same time.

If your looking for a small log splitter to split a few small logs, then this is worth considering, the only downside is that it has a smaller maximum splitting diameter of 250mm, which is half that of the FM10 model which comes with the Duocut blade not much more cost.

BEST MANUAL LOG SPLITTER

Buy from Amazon.co.uk

firstly the Forest Master does a excellent job at splitting very large logs up to 60cm (24"), it only really hesitates, on very knotty logs. But on most logs, it does a great job and splits them fairly quickly.

SPLITS LOTS UP TO 60cm (24inches)

The ‘Forest Master manual Duocut log splitter’, is probably the most powerful ‘manual log splitter’ available, and according to Forest Master themselves, it’s also the fastest manual log splitter available and their probably right.

It has an upgraded and improved dual action jack that produces 10 tons of splitting power and can be operated at two speeds for convenience, fast for smaller more manageable logs and a slower speed to split larger logs.

The first thing you might notice about this model is that it can split logs as big as even the biggest electric log splitter we have seen, now thats impressive for a manual model. In fact, it will split lots up to 60cm in diameter, thats 2ft across. Not many electric model can do that. Of course, it takes more manual power, however its much easier than you probably think thanks to the dual jack system similar to that found on hydraulic car jacks which you pump manually.

To operate, you can use the two handles to operate the log splitter in the horizontal position, perfect for smaller and medium sized logs. It also features two foot pedals, these can be used when splitting larger logs in the vertical upright position, in this position, it will split logs up to 600mm (24 inches) in diameter without too much effort.

It also features two foot pedals, these can be used when splitting larger logs in the vertical upright position, in this position, it will split logs up to 600mm (24 inches) in diameter without too much effort.

What we really like is that you have the option to use both the foots peddles at the same time, or just one peddle when splitting logs.

When using both peddles, it produces a rapid lift of 20mm with each stroke of the peddles, this produces 5 tons of force and is great for splitting smaller logs quickly. For large logs, you use only the right pedal, this produces the full 10 tons of force, this is more than enough to split even the largest logs which makes this manual log splitter one of the most versatile models available.

Features the qnique ‘Duocut design’ which uses two blades

This feature is only fitted to Forest Master Log splitters and is their unique patented design which is why you probably want see it on other brands. This is what that makes all Forest Master log splitters so effective and efficient when compared to other models with a similar splitting force.

Fitted with two opposing blades, one that can be lowered down to one end of the log quickly, and another blade is fitted to the jack. This blade is forced into the log from the other end.

By using ‘two blades’, this means it splits the log from both ends at the same time, the advantage of this, as well as speed, is that if one blades reaches a knot in the log, then the other blade will continue to split the log from the other end. This means it will split most, if not all logs seasoned or green every time and will reduce the strain on the log splitter itself.

firstly the Forest Master does a excellent job at splitting very large logs up to 60cm (24"), it only really hesitates, on very knotty logs. But on most logs, it does a great job and splits them fairly quickly.

Fitted with a safety value to stop you from overloading the jack

One last but important feature this model incorporates, is the ‘safety valve’, this stops you overloading and damaging the hydraulic jack which is a common problem with some other manual models, you only have to read some reviews to see how common this problem is on manual models, however this model as resolved this problem as it releases the pressure if it becomes to great to avoid damaging the hydraulic lifts.

Pros

  • Choose to operate by foot or by hand, in a vertically or horizontal position.
  • Rapid lift jack – 16mm-20mm lift per crank, this produces an impressive 10 tons of splitting force.
  • Duocut Blade- Uses two blade rather than one, splits the log from both ends, comparable to a 20 ton log splitter.
  • Will split logs up to 51cm (20 inches) in length.
  • Splits logs up to 30cm (12 inches) in diameter when used vertically and up to a maximum diameter of 60cm (24 inches) when used horizontally.
  • Adjustable wedge which can be moved closer to log which saves splitting time.
  • Product Weight 36kg.
  • Comes with 1 years manufactures warranty for full peace of mind.

Conclusion

This Forest Master 10 Ton Log splitter, is probably the best manual log splitter we have reviewed and we have looked at lots of models including some that look the same side by side but the components used are never as good and they simply don’t last.

So what makes this model the best choice when it comes to a manual log splitter. Firstly the Forest Master does a excellent job at splitting very large logs up to 60cm (24″), it only really hesitates, on very knotty logs. But on most logs, it should do a great job and splits them fairly quickly.

Couple of points worth mentioning, it takes around 20 minutes to get up and running and you need a couple of different sized allen keys to put it together, with this in mind make sure you have a set ready.

One small possible issue we came across was that the peddles seem a little floppy, it does does not seem to effect the performance, but they seem like they could be improved to make them a little more sturdy.

If your looking for a real workhorse and need to spit very large logs but need a manual model (no electric or petrol models), then this manual model is certainly going to be your best option.

Since we first reviewed this model they have now updated the hydraulic pump to a new improved model, this makes it even more reliable although we never seen a issue with the original pumps.

Overall if you r looking for a serous manual model, this is the one for you.

Commonly asked questions

What is a log splitter

A log splitter is a machine, that is technically a mechanical axe that splits logs with ease in a safe and effortless manner. Its much safer and easier than using an axe.

How does a log splitter work

Log splitters are actually very easy and safe to use, they will typically save you hours of work. Rather than using speed like an axe to split the log, log splitters use large amounts of force (measured in tons), using a hydraulic drive, similar to that on a jack. The easiest to use models are powered by an electric powered motor, which drive a arm with a steel wedge (blade) into the log. The force and wedge then splits the log into several peaces ready to use or store.

They are very simple to use, you either simply press a button or pull a leaver and the log splitter will drive the hydraulic arm and split the log, all within a safe environment.

How quickly do they split logs

There are many different specifications of log splitters, but most powered models will cut around 100 logs in an hour and all without breaking a sweat. Some models have extra features to speed this process up, this includes fully adjustable cycle to match log length so you don’t have to wait for the hydraulic arm to reach the log every-time you cut a log and some also use dual bladed systems that split the log from both ends. This is specially usually on knotted wood because it one side hits a knot and want split the other end continues splitting the log. This is a feature we have only really seen on Forest Master Models but it works really well.

Types of wood that can be split – Seasoned vs Green

Seasoned wood

Seasoned wood has usually already been dried out to some extent, whether its logs that have been cut a few months previously and left or stored purposely to dry out over several months, it usually has a lower moisture content and as a result is much easier to split even with a manual model.

Greenwood is from freshly felled trees and is usually green as the name suggest, it will still have most of its moisture content and is more difficult to split. This this type of wood you need more pressure to split which is measured in toms, the higher the ton rating the better.

With this in in mind, you need to think about what type of wood you will mostly be splitting, if you are splitting fresh wood then look for the most powerful model you can afford.

What size logs can they split

Depending on the model of log splitter you buy, will determine, what size logs they can split  Most will split logs around 370-520mm in length, with a diameter of 250mm for entry and lower powered models and up to 600mm for more powerful models, you can not get manual, electric and petrol models that can split logs up to 600mm thanks to new, more powerful models coming to the market, however they obviously cost more.

5 x Faster than any other model

Logmaster Electric 7 Ton Log Splitter
If your after speed then you won't find a faster model for splitting logs than this. What makes this model really standout from every other log splitter in our review is that this model utilises kinetic flywheel technology which eliminates the need for oil and hydraulics in its operation which means its very low maintenance.

  • The incorporated Flywheel technology splits wood in a matter of seconds.
  • Comes with wheels for easy transportation.
  • The model is easy to work with due to simple two lever operation.
  • Maintenance-free steel construction.
  • Splits all kinds of wood; seasoned, knotty, green wood or dried.
  • 12 month warranty for full peace of mind.

What features and specification you need to pay attention to

Choosing a horizontal log splitter design vs vertical log splitters

Most models come in a horizontal design and personally we think this is probably the best design for ease of use, the main advantage is you can work standing up as many now come a with stand and we think they’re easier to work with like this. They downside is logs can be heavy so if you have logs on the floor, you need to left them up fairly high which can be a little difficult with larger logs. The trick here is to only work with manageable log sizes.

Vertical logs splitters are usually associated with petrol and some manual models, the advantage is you usually don’t have to lift the logs up high and you can normally tilt the log onto the log splitter. This however is only really useful for petrol models because trying to split and very heavy large log with a manual model is usually not an option, with the exception of the Forest Master Manual log Splitter which can but requires a fair bit of manual effort but it is easier than you would think thats to the hydraulic design.

How to compare Electric operated models

Below we are going to look into what to compare when choosing an electric model. Understanding what to compare when deciding which model is right for you is important, below are a few pointers to consider when comparing different electric log splitters.

  • Motor power (measured in watts) : A powerful motor ensures logs split with ease, and most log splitter’s, have motors that are between 1960 watt and 2300 watt. Most are 2200 watt which is more than enough power for splitting most sized logs.
  • Tons of pressure: The amount of pressure used to split logs (the more, the better). Most models are between 5 and 8 tons, if you split a few logs at the weekends, a 5 ton model should be sufficient for you as long as the logs are not to big. However, if you cut large amounts of logs, specially larger logs, you would be better investing in a slightly more powerful 7 or 8 ton model that can handle the extra work load more effectively.
  • Dual action: Some models split logs from both ends, this speeds up the process and makes it easier to split larger logs. All though not essential, models without this feature will split logs just fine as long as they have enough power, this will help split larger logs easier. Our ‘Top Pick’ by Forest Master has this feature.
  • Max splitting length: This is the maximum length of log that can be split, a longer splitting length will mean you have less logs to cut to length before putting them into the log splitter.
  • Max splitting diameter: This is probably, one of the most important considerations. If you have access to very large logs, some smaller models may not split them. If this is the case, you may want to invest in a model that has a larger splitting diameter of around 500mm or 600mm which will split logs as wide as 2ft.

How to compare manual operated models

  • Product weight: With some models weighting in at less than 2kg, all the way to 40kg, its safe to assume that heavier models, are more powerful and will handle more heavy work loads. If you want to make kindling from all ready split logs then a smaller more portable lighter model may be more suitable.
  • Tons of pressure: The amount of pressure used to split logs (More the better). Most models are between 1.2 tons and 10 tons, if you split a few logs at weekend a 1.2 ton model might be right for you. If you cut large amounts of logs you, would may be better investing in a slightly more expensive 8 or 10 ton model that can handle the extra work load.
  • How to use (hand or foot): Most manual log splitters work by pumping a pedal with your foot, however some use a lever or two, which you move up and down with your hand. Some larger models even have both options.
  • Max splitting length: This is the maximum length of log that can be split, a longer splitting length may just mean less logs to cut to length before putting them in the log splitter.

How to compare petrol operated models

Here are a few tips to think about when considering a petrol operated model.

  • Product weight: Consider the weight of the log splitter as petrol models can be heavy to move, most have wheels to aid moving them around, but this can still be difficult if the ground is not smooth.
  • Tons of pressure: The amount of pressure used to split logs (More the better). Most models are between 7 and 22 tons or more.
  • Max splitting length: This is the maximum length of log that can be split, a longer splitting length may just mean fewer logs to cut to length before putting them in the log splitter. This is more of a personal choice, depending on how long you need your logs.

Why a electric model will make your life much easier than using a manual model

manual log splitter vs powered log splitter.

Without question, electric powered log splitters are less demanding than manual log splitters as they require a lot less manual power to split the log. However manual log splitters, still use a hydraulic ram to split logs, so are safer and easier than using an axe and often more competitive on price.

Why you might choose a powered model over a manual model

  • Industrial use or heavy domestic use where the speed of a electric model is essential to save time and money.
  • Easy to use with little effort.
  • Simply prefer to use a powered model, specially with recent lower prices making them more affordable than ever.

Why you might choose a manual powered model over a electric powered model

  • Price: Manual models start as low as £50.00, while electric models cost upwards of £200.00. They’re a big difference in price, the most expensive manual model will still cost less the lowest-priced electric or petrol model.
  • Portability: Where there is no power supply, a manual model may be the only choice and a good alternative. Assuming you don’t want to use a petrol log splitter.
  • Domestic use: You might only use it a couple of times a year, so investing in a manual model, might make more sense than investing in a more expensive powered model.
  • You only require a small log splitter to make kindle from all ready split logs you have. Our recommended entry-level model below is perfect for making kindle.

How to prepare logs ready for splitting

Logs need to be prepared before inserting them into a log splitter, depending on the model, simply cut the logs into a manageable section for (example 370mm long), the easiest way to do this would be with a good chainsaw. Most tree surgeons will have already done this for you as they usually cut them into manageable sections when chopping a tree down to make them easy to move. Once the logs have been cut into manageable pieces simply insert them into the log splitter and operate as instructed on the instructions. A great way to old logs in place when cutting them into sections is by using a log saw horse.

Getting logs from your local tree surgeon to save money

With the rising cost of gas central heating, many homeowners are now installing wood-burning stoves and open fires into their homes. However, the cost of buying bags of cut logs can be expensive, especially if they are already seasoned, but there is another, often, overlooked option.

Many tree surgeons will sell you ‘saw’ logs at very reasonable prices, as they usually have to pay to recycle them at their local recycling centre, so its a win-win situation. Try calling then on the telephone or emailing a few local tree surgeons in your area to see if you can make a deal with them. Remember, most tree surgeons are busiest in winter so you will need to prepare wood in winter and store over the summer in a log store to burn the following winter.
