Circular Saw Buyer's Guide

There are many brands that offer high-quality circular saws. Things might get confusing but that is expected. Now that you are spoilt for choice, you have to be aware of the small differences that make these products differ from each other. Now let’s dig deeper and explore the factors that you need to consider when selecting a circular saw.

Types of circular saws

When it comes to circular saws you have two designs to select from. We have the traditional inline/Sidewinders and worm drives saws. The most notable difference is the positioning of the motor. The sidewinder saws that the motor placed directly above the blade mechanism. These types of saws prove lighter and more compact. They provide better support when working and tend to be more applicable than the worm drive saws.

Worm drive saws have their motors positioned at right angles. They are able to transfer the power needed to the blades through multiple gears. These saws are heavier compared to the inline saws. However, they provide more compact power and work with fewer noise disruptions. These saws are adaptable to heavy duty work with unbelievable ease. They may need more handling because of the raw power they produce but they can work with even the most resistant basic materials.

Therefore, depending on the amount of work to be done or your general preference. You can select between either design available.

Our Best Pick Alternative Circular Saw (Slightly cheaper)

Bosch GKS 190 Professional Hand-Held Circular Saw Review

Bosch GKS 190 Professional Hand-Held Circular Saw

This race was very close between the two circular saws in this category. After careful consideration we gave this title to the Bosch GKS 190 Professional Hand-Held Circular Saw.

Although it is rather heavier, it has more power packed behind it. We love the high speeds and the wider range of bevel cuts.

It is capable of handling heavier workloads without cracking under pressure. It will provide you with excellent value for money.

A high-performance tool for high-performance operators.

Corded vs Cordless

Your circular saw has two options when it comes to power systems. You can select either corded electric or cordless circular saws. Corded circular saws rely on electricity supplied directly from the socket.

The higher the wattage that is consumed, the higher the power provided. These corded circular saws are adapted to handling bulky work. They can cut through ceramic, masonry, steel and wood like it is child's play. With the power that they produce expect them to weigh a tad more than their cordless counterparts.

Cordless circular saws are now often powered from the latest lithium-ion batteries which offer longer run times and shorter charge times sometimes charging fully within 60 minutes. The fact that they use batteries makes them more portable and compact. You can carry them to the working site and use them till the batteries run out. They are definitely lighter than the corded circular saws. The power they produce is limited since they are working on rechargeable batteries. They can only handle small to medium jobs all though some expensive models are now starting to be powerful and robust enough for larger jobs but at a cost.  Its advisable to have a spare battery is not several unlike you only use it for a hour hear and there.

Type of blade

The blades are responsible for all the cutting, so it is better if you are certain of the quality of the blade. There are different blades suited for working with different materials all though some blades are suitable for a range of materials such as the one fitted to the Evolution RAGE Multi purpose circular saw which we review further down. The thickness and construction material of these blades are different. First, you have to ensure that the blade is compatible with the saw.

There are different types of blades available on the market. Some of the most popular ones include:

  • Masonry blades - They are usually adapted to dealing with masonry related materials. They are made of abrasive material and are a slightly thick to ensure fast and precise cutting.
  • High-speed steel - these blades are among the strongest. The cost more than regular steel blades but provide longer service.
  • Carbide tip blades - These blades are harder than the high-speed steel blades. The carbide or tungsten teeth give it the extra edge. They can work with ease when dealing with difficult materials. If you are working on a hardwood project, these blades are highly recommended.
  • Specialised blades - There are blades in the market that are designed for only specific jobs. These blades tend to cost much more than the regular blades. You can get some with aluminium oxide tips which are known to handle tougher than normal materials.

Your blade has to have the right length and diameter so as to cut through different materials. A short blade will prove disappointing even when handling basic materials like wood.

The right Shoe

The shoe basically refers to the base of the circular saw. The right shoe makes sure that the saw remains in position while cutting. This support feature is crucial to the accuracy of your circular blade. There are three possible recommendations for the right shoe materials.

  • Steel - they are more pocket-friendly than the other materials. The only limitation is that they are vulnerable to damage very easily. They are liable to minor damages that can be fixed. They, however, need replacement if they twist.
  • Magnesium - Usually you discover that these shoes on high-end circular machines. They are durable and lighter than their counterparts. They are also more expensive but they offer value for money.
  • Aluminium - these shoes are tougher and thicker than regular steel. They provide a stable base and are more resistant to damages than steel.

  • It comes with a dust blower for debris removal and hex wrench for easy blade change.

The Makita DSS610Z 18V Cordless Li-ion Circular Saw is a surprise. We expected to find something bulky and hard to move. To our glee, this is a lightweight model weighting only 3.5kg without the battery. This cordless circular saw is reliant on Makitas 18V Lithium-Ion batteries of which you can use the 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah & 5.0Ah, the higher the Ah the longer the saw will run for. Most cordless tools attain the extra weight from the battery packs. This power tool has excellent running time overall. You do not have to worry about stopping work mid-section. The machine's weight is well balanced which means working for extended periods with this saw is not a challenge.

For the safety purpose, this model is fitted with an electric brake. This convenient feature makes starting and stopping the machine child’s play. The safety trigger is also another safety mechanism. They have made sure that it is sizable for easier access.and the soft grip makes ensures you can handle the machine well when kickbacks are experienced. This circular saw operates at a speed 3700rpm. This speed is fast enough to manage to go through wood, metal and plastic. There are no gears in this circular saws so there is no load speed. Once it roars it is ready to go.

We have seen that not many models include LED lights for better visibility, this model LED job light to mark the cutting line for better accuracy.

The tungsten carbide blade that comes with this model works wonders. It is durable and long lasting. The high abrasion helps when working with tough materials. The 165mm diameter blade will cut through to a length 57mm. This is adequate. The dust blower makes you cutting line more visible keeping debris clear of the cutting line. Depending on the material you are working with, volumes of debris may vary. Make sure that this feature available if you work with materials like wood. It does not come with its own dust bag which is a little of a letdown. Otherwise, it is sufficient.

  • You have to purchase the batteries and charger separately. However if you all ready own Makita tools and have 18v batteries they should work in this model saving you some money.

Would we recommend - The Makita DSS610Z 18V Cordless Li-ion Circular Saw is powerful despite the light weight design and relatively small size when compared to some of the other models, specially the cordless ones.

The speed is adequate and the batteries have a good running time if you use the 4Ah or 5Ah 18 battery. To make matters better, the LED lights have been installed which is a nice little touch.

You have to calculate how much you will end up spending before you purchase this product. At the current prices when we reviewed it, the bare tool will set you back a little under £120 with two 4Ah batteries and a charger costing a further £150-160 making the complete set some where around £280. Still this is a fair bit cheaper than the DeWalt alternative.

Overall though its a really good piece if your after a decent cordless circular saw.?

  • If you have the 18v 3Ah batteries you may have trouble using them as the saw might trip through over heating. Ideally you need at least the 4Ah batteries and it seems to work fine. So if you purchase batteries, make sure you invest a little more in the 18v 4Ah lithium batteries

Would we recommend - The Ryobi RWSL1801M 18V One+ Circular Saw is a light model best suited for DIY enthusiast and home users. However, it has the ability to produce compact power and will cut through most materials with ease all harder materials and woods so drain the battery much faster.

We are happy that the saw is ergonomically designed and the laser function is a really nice addition to this model.

It is not adaptable to handling bulk assignment and it should be left for home projects.

For a better model in the same range, we would recommend the Makita DSS610Z 18V Cordless Li-ion Circular Saw. It has more power behind it. If you need a basic circular cordless saw you can settle for this one and with the saw, battery and charger cost just around £150 - £160 if offers excellent value for money.

The Bosch PKS 18 LI Cordless Circular Saw is ideal for working with woodwork products on lighter home jobs. It can be rated among the best circular saw blade for plywood if not for a few challenges.

The model relies on 18V Lithium-Ion batteries. These batteries are convenient because they can self-charge and they are easily available. To make sure that the energy produced is well consumed. The Bosch manufactures installed the Syneon chip. The Syneon chip is majorly responsible for managing power levels between the motor and the batteries to ensure it gets the right amount of power when needed.

This model comes with high-quality ‘Circular saw blade speedline’. These type of blade has the advantage of providing long clean cuts. This blade is specially formulated for woodwork and comes with a diameter of 150mm. with this diameter, you have the ability to cut materials up to 48mm, this is sufficient length, especially when working with plywood.

This warranty is extended if the product is registered within 28 days of purchase.

  • It does not come with a case for carriage or storage.
  • It lacks the power of other models making it not suitable for more heavy duty work.

Would we recommend - The Bosch PKS 18 LI Cordless Circular Saws is marketed as a wood saw. It has an agile blade that is able to deal with the demands presented.

The speed of 3800rpm and smart motor makes it a valuable tool for small jobs but it certainly does not have the power for more demanding jobs and certainly not trade use.

If you are looking for a relatively cheap credible DIY circular saw, then this model is perfect.

If you have Bosch products that utilise the same batteries, you don’t have to purchase others as its part of the Bosch power-sharing plan. However the full set include a battery and charger will only cost you a little over £120 making it by far the cheapest cordless circular saw and to say it comes with 3 years warranty is simply amazing. Great for wood, not for much else.

Finals thoughts and conclusion

From what we have seen, the differences between the models might be minor.  These minor differences, however, can affect the quality of your work and what the saw can actually saw through.

Take your time to observe these differences and most importantly power. Remember to work within a budget so that you do not overspend on features you not need. Cordless models are the cheapest by far but the power cords can become a nuisance and cordless models are either expenisve or limit power if the at the low end of the market.
