Specifications and features
Our OLIGHT S1R Baton Review
To begin with, the torch comes in an attractive package which has the picture of it on the front and the detailed information on the back which is a good start as it makes it easy to see all the features before opening. You open the box using a tab which tears across the top, you then have a small tab you pull out that removes the torch as well as the USB cable, lanyard, and instructions. This alone is very impressive and reminds me of how Apple give a good experience with their products before you have even used the product by giving a fantastic un-boxing experience and the way everything is boxed up and slides out. First impressions are that the device is very tiny, certainly pocket size, portable and that is exactly what you want in a EDC torch. First impressions are that its very well made and certainly no cheaper models can even compare to the build quality.
What's in the box?
- OLIGHT S1R Rechargeable flashlight
- 1 x Removable pocket clip
- 1 x Rechargeable 550mAh 3.7V 5C RCR123A Li-Ion battery
- 1 x MCC Magnetic USB charging cable
- 1 x lanyard
- 1 x pouch
- User manual (which are very easy to read and understand unlike a lot of instructions we have tried to figure out in the past)
This torch might be small but you will struggle to damage it. It is made of 6061-T6 aluminium (not sure what the numbers mean but its certainly well made), basically its scratch resistant, waterproof and impact resistance. The torch has a IPX8 water ingress rating, meaning it is protected against submersion up to 1.5 metres. Now we didn't test it to 1.5m, however we did leave it on a bucket of water for over an hour and it was absolutely fine. In addition, it can withstand impact from a height of 1.5 metres. For this we did drop it onto concrete a few times, again, no problems, all seems intact and undamaged. The switch has a good, solid feel as well for long-term functionality. The switch is made from a rubber material and seems smooth enough with a nice click sound as you switch between models.
Light Modes and Beam quality
The torch has 6 brightness levels, of which three are "hidden". They are moonlight, low, mid, high, turbo and strobe.
Moonlight mode is the dimmest level the OLIGHT SR1 offers. It's only 0.5 lumens but it's more useful than you may think. It does not glare in your eyes unlike all the other models, making it the best light for reading maps etc. To enter moon light mode, while turned off, hold the switch down for over a second and it will switch on in moonlight mode.
Next we have low, medium and high modes are ideal for normal use, and the brightness can be increased or reduced as needed. The mode spacing is exceptionally good and easy to work via an intuitive switch. To switch betwen the modes, with the torch turned on, hold down the switch and it will switch between the three models.
Super easy to remember up to now, for reading, while turned off, hold the switch for over a second to end 'dim mode'. Then to change the brightness level, hold the switch to cycle through the different brightness levels.
Below is a summary of all the modes and how long they can run, we haven't tested these but we can tell you that under normal use during our testing it lasted hours and didn't need recharging.
Strobe - 900 lumens: 1.5 mins (brightness drops to 300 lumens after 1.5 mins, up to 50 minutes to prevent overheating)
Turbo - 600 lumens: 1.5 mins (brightness drops to 300 lumens after 1.5 mins, up to 55 minutes to prevent overheating)
High - 300 lumens: 1 hour
Medium - 60 lumens: 4.5 hours
Low - 12 lumens: 33 hours
Moonlight - 0.5 lumens: 15 days
The S1R features TIR reflector that produces a large, defined beam. It sheds light up to a distance of 145 metres, which is a solid throw for such a tiny torch. Tthis is one of the things we found impressive for such a tiny torch, just how far it could through the beam.
The pictures below were taken to show the brightness of this little but powerful torch in each mode. The images don't actually show the true full brightness. It did actually light up the area more than the photograph were able to capture. For example in Turbo S mode, it actually lit up the whole garden but hopefully they will give you a good idea of how bright this little torch is.
Turbo S setting
2 Timer modes includes ( 3 minutes and 9 minutes)
A feature this torch does have is two timer setting where it will automatically turn the torch off after either 3 minutes, when in short timer mode, or 9 minutes, if in the longer 9 minute mode.
When the torch is turned on double click the switch and then hold the switch, if it flashes once, its in short mode, repeat the process again straight away, and it will enter the longer timer mode.
A pocket clip is an important feature of a EDC torch and this one comes with a removable sturdy stainless steel clip. The clip comes in handy when hands-free working is a priority or when you simply need to keep the device within arms reach. It can be hung on a belt, backpack, pocket and literally anywhere the clip can hook onto. We do like that it is removable which means it can be made even more compact, however even with the clip on its still very small, not sure why you would want to remove it but at least you have the option.
This LED torch is powered by 550mAh RCR123 rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery with a "high discharge rate". In this context, we are referring to the rate at which the battery can discharge relative to its maximum capacity. This one discharges 100 Amps per hour, meaning it depletes in 5 hours if running at 100 Amps, or up to 15 days running at low settings. Basically its fitted with a high performance battery, much better than the ones found in most cheaper torches which not only prolongs battery life but also improves performance in terms of brightness levels.
Something we do really is the magnetic charging cable its comes with that attaches to the magnetic base of the torch for charging. We did really like this simple feature, just feels much better than the micro USB and similar push in points you have to insert into most other torch. The charging cable also has a LED display that shows red when charging the torch and green when fully charged which is does on around an hour which is equally impressive.
Useful usability extras you get
The OLIGHT S1R features a flat magnetic tail cap that lets you rest it on ferrous metal surfaces, making for a hands-free light source. Basiclly anything a magnet will stick to this torch will also stick to, another feature we like that could come in very useful.
The supplied lanyard also comes in useful to help you avoid dropping the torch and you can let go of the torch if you need two hands free. This torch can as well be used tail standing due to its flat base, and it can illuminate an entire room when lit in this position. Another impressive feature we really thing would come in useful is the lockout mode, this prevents accidental activation that may drain the battery unnecessarily. To use this mode its super simple, while turned off just hold the switch for 2 seconds, it enters moon light mode first to let you no its in lock-out mode and then turns off. If you press the button then nothing happens, this is handy if you have it in your pocket to avoid accidentally switching the torch on.
If you want to check its in lockout mode, press the switch for under a second and the switch will flash red, its not really obvious because its not that bright, however, it does the job. To switch the torch on just hold the switch for a couple of seconds.
A problem we have seen with previous torches is that they are usually round, the problem with this is they often roll off tables etc, now with this mode, it may not be an amazing feature but it has an anti-roll collar design, the S1R will not roll away when placed on a sloping surface. Simple but very useful, specially if placed on a table that is not perfectly level.
Before I forget, a feature it does have we have not really mentioned i this review yet is the Strobe feature, basically it you press the switch quickly 3 times, it enters strobe mode, SOS style and flashes very fast until turned off, this would be brilliant for getting someones attention in an emergency.
The Olight S1R Baton LED Torch is a small device that is capable of lighting up acres of darkness. This is evident from its impressive beam distance of 145m max. Six levels of brightness ensure that you can produce just enough light depending on the need. The fact that this compact flashlight can be hooked to another object, attached to a ferrous metal surface, or used tail standing simply promotes the much-desired hands-free working.
We couldn't find any hiccups with this tiny torch and we tend to believe it's worth every penny.
We like the 5-year warranty which we believe sums up this remarkable little torch. If you are looking for a very good quality compact and bright LED torch, the OLIGHT S1R is one you should seriously consider.
The only real downside is that because its got so many features, we found it difficult to remember all the modes without reading the instructions, in case you wondering the instructions are very easy to read though. However, its still very easy to use and most will only need to remember the few features they usually use themselves such as switching through the different brightness levels and using lockout mode and dim mode for reading.
Overall this is certainly the best small torch we have reviewed and still much better than many larger torches in terms of performance and quality. If may be a little expensive, however, we think its worth every penny.
