Why buy a flymo hover mower
Flymo hover mowers work, by simply gliding along on a cushion of air, this has a few unique advantages over other rotary lawnmowers and cylinder mowers. Below we go other what the main advantages which makes them often, the perfect choice for home owners.
- As hover mowers float on a cushion of air, they are generally very lightweight when compared to model other types lawnmowers, this makes them very easy to manoeuvre around the lawn when in use. There compact design with them fold down handles means they are very easy to store and most models can even be stored, hanged against a wall.
- They are perfectly designed for using on small and medium size lawns, they are absolulty perfect for getting into small awkward areas and into corners on the lawn, specially where larger wheeled mowers might struggle. They are also very well designed for using on gardens with slopes
- Most Flymo lawnmowers are powered by corded electric which makes them affordable to run and much cheaper than some other models available.
- Flymo have over 50 years experience in designing and manufacturing lawnmowers, this makes them one of the most trusted and leading brands, so you know your buying a quality product from a brand you can trust. All there lawnmowers come with 1 years warranty.
Choosing the right hovermower for your garden
Choosing the right hover mower for your needs really depends in the size of your garden. Smaller models which are usually around 1150 – 1300 WATT are ideal for small gardens where as more powerful models which are usually up to 1800 WATT are better for larger gardens and have a wider cutting width. Flymo even do a petrol powered model powered by a 160cc Honda engine which are the best in the business, for those larger or more remote areas where corded electric is not suitable.
If you try mowing a larger garden with a smaller less powerful mower, this can burn out the motor and in some cases void any warranty. Bigger models with larger wattage motors overcome this problem.
The other point you need to consider is whether you need the mower to collect the grass cutting or you prefer to leave the grass cutting on the lawn, this does put nutrients back into the lawn and can be beneficial. Alternatively you could rake them up if you find this messy, specially if you have pets or children.
The reason this needs to be taken into consideration is some models have collection boxes, and some even have a clear viewing window so you can see when the collection box is full, handy little feature but not essential, a good idea all the same.

FLYMO EASI GLIDE 300 HOVER LAWNMOWER REVIEW
**WINNER OF OUR BEST PICK**
The Flymo Easi Glide 300 it the next step up from the Flymo Hovervac, it looks and feels very similar. Designed with smaller and medium size gardens in mind, it has the same 1300 WATT motor, but it powers a slightly larger metal cutting blade.
It has 4 cutting height setting from 10mm, up to 30mm for longer lawns, the cutting height is set by using spacers, as with all flymo models with the exception of the UltraGlide model.
The Easi Glide 300 is slightly wider and as such, has a wider cutting width of 30cm and a longer 12 meter cable which comes in useful for medium size gardens.
If you have a medium size garden and are looking for a hover mower which is slightly larger than the entry level 'Hovervac' model, then this could be a good alternative.
At the time of our first review we did on this model in 2015, it was the best selling flymo on Amazon.co.uk, even now two years larger in 2017 its still a 'Best Seller' and has over 400 fantastic reviews, of which, very few are negative..
This affordable model, also collects and compacts the grass which means less emptying and more mowing.
Overall, a great choice for anyone looking for reliable hover mower for small or medium sized lawns without breaking the bank.
FLYMO HOVERVAC 280 LAWNMOWER REVIEW
**BEST BUDGET MODEL WHICH COLLECTS**
If your looking for your first affordable flymo lawnmower, or have a small garden and are looking for a hovermower that collections the grass, rather than cutting and leaving the grass clipping, then the Flymo Hovervac 280 is certainly worth considering.
Powered by a powerful 1300 watt motor, it’s been designed with smaller gardens in mind. It has a cutting with of 28cm (11.02?), and can be adjusted between 4 different cutting heights (10 – 30 mm / 0.39mm – 1.18inch), depending on what length you want your lawn to be.
It also collects the grass into its integrated designed 20 litre collection box which is concealed within the back of the mower, perfect for easy emptying.
Its has a long 10 meter power cable which gives you plenty of reach for longer gardens and has a metal blade, which generally have a longer life than cheaper plastic blades found on inferior models.
At 8.8kg it’s one of the lightest models, this means is easy to move around, the handle also folds down for easy storage.
The Flymo Hovervac has excellent, near perfect user reviews on Amazon.co.uk (read reviews here), this is unusual for a lawnmower so we do not really have a bad word to say about it.
It offers excellent value for money and is a great lawnmower for smaller gardens, specially if your new to mowing the lawn.
To be honest though, during our research, we found that the slightly wider Easi Glide (Our Best Pick), is often cheaper due to the deals available on Amazon.
FLYMO TURBO LITE 330 HOVER LAWNMOWER REVIEW
If your looking for a powerful little lawnmower that is light weight, easy to carry and more inportantly, you don’t need to collect the grass, then the Flymo Turbo Lite is worth considering. The metal cutting blade is powered by a powerful, 1150 watt motor, this ensures it plenty of cutting power to cut through even the toughest grass.
It has a wide cutting width of 33cm and a cutting height of 10 to 30 mm which can be adjusted in 4 steps using the spacers provides. They spacers are easy to adjust with the tool which comes included and takes only a few minutes to do.
The Turbo Lite 330 is designed with small and medium gardens in mind, it has a long 10 meter cable which ensures your not left short when mowing your lawn.
Its important to remember that this model does not collect the grass, this means you either have to leave the grass clipping on the lawn, which does help put nutrients back into the lawn which encourages a healthier lawn.
If leaving the clipping on the lawn is not for you, you will need to rake the grass clipping up after mowing, which can all ways be composted or put into your compost bin.
This is one of the most popular mowers available by Flymo, whether your new to mowing the lawn or an experienced gardener this is a good choice for everyone.
I think it is worth mentioning that some of the reviews on Amazon, and there's now over 1000 of them, commented on how light weight it is making it ideal for gardeners who may not be as strong or are disabled in a way they makes heavier mowers difficult to use.
A great feature is the way it lays flat and the handle folds down, this is great as you can hook it onto the wall out the way, you cannot do this with many other mowers on the market.
The only downside is that it does not collect the grass, some gardeners might prefer this feature. If this is the case, the Flymo EasiGlide 330VX is very similar in terns of performance and cutting and collects the grass.
Larger 40cm version also available
If you really Flymo Turbo Lite 330 without the collect box, but are looking for something a little bigger. Flymo also do another model which is called the 'Turbo 400'. Its nearly identical, with the exception of a more powerful 1500 watt motor, a wider 40cm cutting blade as well as a longer 12 meter power cord.
You can view this larger Flymo Turbo 400 model here
FLYMO EASI GLIDE 330VX HOVER LAWNMOWER REVIEW
**Extra wide 33cm cutting width and viewing window on the collection box are useful advantages**
If your looking for a flymo with a little more power and a wider cutting width, then this Flymo 330VX model could tick all the boxes. Powered by 1400 Watt motor, this gives it maximum cutting power to cut through longer grass.
It has a wider cutting width of 33cm which obviously covers more area faster, the grass clipping are not only collected, they are also compacted and stored in a unique green 20 litre transparent collection box which also has a special viewing window so you can see when it has become fill.
The cutting height is the same as previous models above (10mm-20mm), again it can be adjusted to 4 different heights using the spacers provided which only take a few minutes to change once you got the hang of it.
This is also one of the best flymo models, however, its also one of the most expensive flymo models. At under £100 is still offers value for money in terms of lawn mower prices, however it is nearly double the price of our 'Best Pick'.
The only negative comments to speak of is the 12 meter cable would be better if it was longer for more reach, I suppose it depends how big your garden is but a 15 meter cable would be much better.
A good all rounder mower for small and medium size gardens. The extra cutting width and viewing window on the collection box are good advantages, we also like the Ergonomically designed handles and rollers which make moving it around easier. However at just over 8kg, its not exactly heavy either.
Overall a beautifully designed hover mower but at a premium.
FLYMO ULTRAGLIDE LAWNMOWER REVIEW
**The most advanced Flymo available**
When Flymo brought the new Flymo Ultraglide Mower to the market, they promised it would change mowing for ever. The features sounded like this new model would make mowing the lawn effortless, Flymo also claim, that the ‘Ultraglide’ was the most advanced hover mower available.
Designed to cut right up close against fences, walls, it will even mow over the edge of lawns leaving your lawn neat and tidy, but is it really the perfect lawnmower.
New DuoTech system for advanced cutting and collecting
So what makes it so good and more advanced, firstly it uses what Flymo call a ‘DuoTech system’ which they say ensures the best cut possible as it uses an 'advanced vacuum system' to lift the grass before the metal cutting blade, cuts the grass and compacts and packs it into the large collection box.
The UltraGlide is powered by Flymo’s most powerful motor, a very impressive 1800 Watt motor and it also has the widest cutting width of any flymo lawnmower at 36cm whoch gives it great cutting coverage. This is backed up by a large 30 litre collection box to collect all that grass, it also features a clear window so you can see when the collect box is full and ready to empty. It also has the longest power cord of any Flyo model, at 15 meters it longest enough for most average sized lawns.
The downside is, the extra features and its larger size means it is heavier than other models at 12kg, however this is still considerably lighter than many other mowers and is still light enough for most gardeners to pick up and store.
Finally, the extra handy feature this hover mower does have is 4 different cutting heights of (13-32mm), unlike other hover mowers, the cutting height can be changed using a simple leaver on the front of the mower. All though this is nothing new on most wheeled lawn mowers, it certainly is on hover mowers so its a nice feature to see,
This hovermower did promise to be all things good, in truth it has mixed reviews online, some excellent, but some are disappointing.
One consistent problem many users have reported, is the motor burning out and sometimes after the 12 months warranty has expired.
Would we recommend the Flymo Ultraglide, its hard to decide to probably not. At around £150.00, its not cheap and there us just too many negative reviews to simply ignore them as one off isolited problems
I would probably recommend you go for the Easi Glider 330VX, its slightly smaller but has a much better track record and will save you a good amount of money.
To be fair, we have not personally had any issues with this model, its just hard to ignore so many negative comments.
FLYMO 160cc PETROL POWERED LAWNMOWER REVIEW
**Ideal for semi-professional use, now power cord to worry about**
If your looking for a hovermower for use where an electric flymo is simply not an option, then this Flymo 160cc Petrol Lawnmower may be worth considering.
Its powered by a powerful 160cc (5.5hp) Honda engine which gives it plenty of power and by all counts is fairly quiet, specially when compared to other petrol lawnmowers on the market. It's also worth noting that Honda are renowned for there reliable, high quality engines and are used on professional lawnmowers and machines around the world. This is why Flymo have opted for this engine for there petrol flymo,.
The engine is a 4-stroke model which makes re-fueling easy and simple. Its designed for large scale domestic use as well as semi-professional use. What makes it a great option is its ability to be used on slopes up to 45 degrees, making it ideal for mowing banks.
The powerful 160cc Honda engine, powers a very strong, high quality steel 50.5cm cutting blade which is designed to last last.
By all accounts, this mower gets the job done, it also has excellent overall reviews online including on Amazon.co.uk. Two comments that regularly come up were about the quality and how good it is, as well as how well it cuts grass, even when wet as well as how quiet the Honda engine is. You can read some of the customer reviews on Amazon here
The only negatives comments are in regards to the weight, at around 20kg, its fairly heavy, but being that is powered by a large Honda engine, this is to be expected.
To help with the weight and transporting you can get a transport wheel kit (view here) which is sold separately.
Overall you want find a more powerful hover mower, the only real downside is the expensive price tag.
